Subject: Free beer - what I learned today

Yesterday I attended a talk given by an elderly Beduin who, as a teenager, saw the Jews literally build a county around him. He spoke of the initial tensions before the war of independence, and the subsequent good relations between the local Beduin and the local Jews, and spoke of the real possibility of peace between the two peoples. (Cousins. he called us). On his way out of the venue, he accepted a glass of beer from the refreshment stand. Only 4.5% alcohol, but beer. In the afternoon. And this is the month of Ramadan, remember? It occurred to me at that moment the old Mustapha the Beduin was right. Muslims who drink beer during Ramadan can certainly live in peace with Jews who grill steaks on the day of atonement (Yom Kippur). I wouldn't give anyone else much of a chance, though.
