Subject: Missile test above Israel
Shirrush    1/17/2008 3:33:15 PM
This morning, a large missile was launched at Palmakhim AFB (a.k.a Palma de Majim), and its very fast plume was seen in most of Israel as it soared northwards along the coast. MoD let out that they had a "very satisfactory" trial of "a new rocket propulsion system" but declined to disclose details about the type of vehicle involved.

Thoroughly obfuscating MSM article with amateur footage here.
The much better Channel 2 footage is here (warning: Hebrew, and not really mozillable: switch to the IE rendering engine). In the first 30  seconds (after the commercial), you can see second-stage separation, with the booster falling behind. The commentary suggests a ballistic test of something like the rumored Jericho III. Cattle excrement! if it was so, what novel rocket propulsion would that be, and can the second-stage separation of a MRBM be seen at such a low altitude? Does this look like a ballistic trajectory?
If this new propulsion thing is only a range/maneuverability improvement of the ballistic missiles the IDF does not say it has, why do they say that "the military will review the new system's incorporation in its various missiles"?

As much as my eyes can see, this looks like the real thing: they've just tested the solid-fuel ramjet/scramjet cruise missile the Hebe military forum had been whispering about following the Technion test just a little bit more than a year and a half ago (09 May 06)! Okay, it's half a year after Taiwan pulled such a trick, but nevertheless, yikes!

What do you tech war experts say? Was that the real "Gabriel 5", or what?

Another warning to Iran maybe?

That is a high altitude launch. What it is I won't pretend to guess, but it does not behave like any cruise missile I've ever seen. I'm almost convinced its a multi-stage rocket

Hello Herald.
A multi stage rocket is nothing new for the Israeli aeronautics community, and they said they have tested a new propulsion system.
I do not know for sure, but I do not think that booster separation/second stage ignition of a ballistic missile can be seen from the ground with the unaided eyes, as in the footage. In any case, it seems to be a very short burn (as in: just enough to gather sufficient speed to fire a ramjet) for the first stage of a 2,800 miles ranged rocket. It also makes sense, for the first flight test of a screamer, to give it a high-altitude flight profile, in order to maximize range and to make ground radar monitoring easier, at least in the initial phase of the flight. Just my two Agorot...

Video-Delta IV Vandenberg.

You can see solid propellant boosters discarded.

What a rocket-boosted ramfeed air breathing missile should look like.

SCRAMJET test.

Please note that the scramjet operated after the plunge back into the Earth's atmosphere.

As I said, I don't know what it was, but it looked like a step rocket in its fly-out.

...And also for the link to Tal Inbar's article at TFOT.info I should have referred to in the first place instead of linking to the Hebe thread about Ramtech Technion grad project. Silly me!
Anyway, you'll note that the Israeli rocket's boost phase is much, much shorter than the Delta 4 one.
