Subject: Why is Gaza occupied?
gleb_f    10/25/2007 11:58:48 AM
Since Israel has left Gaza two years ago it is still considered occupied by many, including Israeli publicists. This is because Israel controls land borders and sea/air access to the strip. I would like to know what should Israel do to relieve itself from any legal obligations towards Gaza. After all it has a land border with Egypt and partial blockade of a country was practiced in the past by others without being considered occupation (for example Iraq before the second war).

First of all, Israel is on the other side of the land border, so it should have some control over what crosses and what doesn't.
Second , if Israel doesn't control access/borders etc, who does ? Names, addresses and accountability please.

If Israel REALLY wanted to remove all ideas of itself occupying or controlling Gaza in ANY way, Israel should immediately terminate any and all services it provides -  electricity, water, food, access to work in Israel, monetary transfers, etc, and THEN tell the Hamas leaders - "You wanted complete control over your own territories? You've got it. Now YOU provide all the services on your own or get it from somewhere else - we've washed our hands of you." Then build a moat 100 feet deep on the Israeli side of the fence, fill it with sea water, and let a couple dozen very hungry known man-eating sharks (not UN Lawyers) start swimming in it as part of the local ecosystem. They'll feel right at home.

swhitebull - looks like the electricity cutoff is already starting, courtesy of unrelenting Qassam rocket attacks. Let the PALIS choke to death on their own hatred. Israel should be under NO obligation to provide any services to a people that turns around and attacks them at will. Sheer STUPIDITY on the part of the Olmert govt.
