Is any one watching the President's address to Congress and us? I am confused, I try to watch the news, but it just makes me sick, CNN, and other news stations spend days on bull, and I cant stand watching it, seems people care more about American Idol and celebrities than anything else so I rarely make it to when they are talking about the war, and Iraq. When I do, its just body counts, clips of americans dieing etc, nothing to help the peoples moral, in return that is why, at least to my knowledge that the opion of the war has turned to the worse. But now, when Bush adresses us about the war, on future plans, sending more troops, all of Congress gives a standing ovation? I thought the peopple didnt support the war, (I know they support the troops but I thought they didnt support the war:-$ I am confused, if anyone can help me out I am much obliged. Thank you Colts

I didn't. I find domestic politics boring and not enough to have to endure the everybody-hates-everybody-but-can't-explain-why stuff. Bush is only an average rhetorician so I hardly expected to hear anything worth the bother, and I knew my own opinion.
The script of the speech is available at various threads. It wasn't abysmal but it wasn't the best.

The people are fickle and we think to highly of them. They will support the war when we are winning and be in despair when it seems to go slowly.
Also some people give a standing ovation by habit.
And no congressman wants to be blamed if we lose.

In anycase saying the people are against the war is doubtful. They are really against stasis. In any case it is more Washington courtiers that are against the war then the people. They follow polls like a bull following a red rag. But polls don't have anything to do with the war until the next election. Bush has never been known for paying attention to them before and he has nothing left to lose now as he cannot be elected again.
The Democrats are in more of a bind then they look. They have no platform of their own, they have both the hippys and the paleos in their camp-and loud as they are, they are arguably more a liability then an asset-and the Democrats have no room to maneuver. If the surge succeeds the Republicans can say "I told you so". If it fails the blame can be passed to them and many will be inclined to aggree. If there is an over-early withdrawl our foreign policy will get clogged up for decades from loss of prestiege, which also gives a chance to say, "I told you so." And no one really wants to be the one who votes against funds as then their opponents will simply bring out the widows and orphans of those that theoretically could have been saved. And "I hate Bush", has only two more years to go.  The Democrats are about to get blasted again as the defeat party. Whether or not they deserve it, presumably you have your own opinion on. But they are going to get the blame.

In point of fact I really do wish people would spend more time on American Idol then the war. This kind of war takes a while and nothing exciting happens. The way they behave is rather like pacing around just outside the operating room: they ought to just go read a fishing magizine in the lobby and leave the surgeon alone because then he will be most effective.
Policy has already been decided and stewing about it will do no one any good.
Also terrorists want public attention. If there was a way to punish them without making such heavy weather of it I wish we could do so. Which is another reason why the people should watch American Idol(actually, I would prefer something better but that's another story): it makes terrorists less terrifying.

The two statements are not contradictory. By the nature of their trade power-brokers pay an unseemly amount of attention to polls. But they have generally been found less bellicose then the population for whatever reason.
