Subject: Saddam hanged - the unofficial video
eu4ea    12/31/2006 11:12:46 PM
is here: pandachute.com/videos/leaked_saddam_being_hung_video (warning - very graphic) The thing that struck me most when watching it is that.... even in this they're a mess. It's a bunch of people hanging around, one guy chanting about Moqtada, others arguing in shouts, one of the executioners making some remark, Hussein himself starts arguing back with the others, another guy is shouting for the others to shut up... The whole thing is pathetic, in the strict sense of the word. Amazingly, Saddam was by far the most dignified of the lot. Even after they finally hang him, they manage to get about one second of silence - then they all start shouting, chanting and shoving all over again. *No* idea why we think this crew can succesfully run a parliamentary democracy. Hell, I doubt they could run a condo meeting about putting new lamps in the lobby without getting into a shouting match... Heart, eu4ea PS This article has a translation of what was said, and some more context.

Look at that shakey, grainy, disorganized cell phone video of the execution of the last great mass murderer of the 20th century?!?!? Forget that the planet Earth has never had this kind of purely democratic perspective of history in the making in the history of civilization before. They'll be talking about that for millenia to come. My question is.. who seriously believes these undignified, dumb Arabs can get their country in order? They can't even shutup and stop shouting or hold their Verizon Wireless Chocolate phones still for 10 seconds to give us Westerners a decent YouTube video! How are they gonna give themselves democracy???

...some of these posts & threads I've read on StrategyPage are the most inane and idiotic things I've ever read, and I fear they have seriously lowered my IQ...

Fear not, Bob. Leftists never say anything intelligent, because by nature, they can't.

People always do that at an execution. They did that at Ted Bundy's too. That is one reason why they no loonger have public executions in those Western countries that have the death penalty.

So maybe leftists arn't intelligence--but some dumbness in a human being is a blessing--NOTE: They were(the executioners) were singing praises of Moqtada Sadr not Bush or USA. And eu4ea--they will have a Shiite theoracratic"democracy" of sorts soon. Plus Iran will have a nuke in 3 years and control of the worlds largest oil reserves -hallelujah!!!

Suddenly, witnesses recalled, the room erupted in Shiite religious chants as the Shiite Muslims in the audience seized the moment they had long sought. One man yelled, "Moqtada, Moqtada, Moqtada," unveiling his loyalty to radical anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Hussein smiled, the witnesses said, and asked sarcastically, "Moqtada

++Question for u AK
Why did Hussein smile and sarcastically say "Moqtada"??

Yes they will. Iran is a "Shiite theoracratic democracy of sorts", and that's what Iraq is going to get, "soon".  We'll have radical anti-american Islamic clerics, such Al-Sadr, calling the shots - arguably they do already. And yes, Iran will continue to develop it's nukes.

Bleat all you want about "leftists" - the fact of the matter is that this radical degeneration of America's interests in the region is the direct and inevitable consequence of Bush jr's braindead policies in the area.  As are, incidentally, 3000+ American dead, $400+ billion wasted, and Republicans getting kicked out of both the House and the Senate.

*That* is precisely what is goign on here.  In this context, your droning on about how unintelligent the "leftists" are is.... more than a little humorous.

An aside relating to this drivel, if you are so confident to know 'what is precisely going on here' with regards to House and Senate races of 06; would you mind listing for me the seats that changed Parties and what those campaigns were run on? To narrow that effort just the ones that were Iraq issue related only. Hint: It won't take long at all.

I dont understand what you are trying to say here, anuts. Sentences like "To narrow that effort just the ones that were Iraq issue related only" make only marginal sense, and I find myself wondering what you could have meant.

My best guess is that what you are trying to say something like

"Given that US elections involve a variety of issues, the historic defeat the Republicans suffered last month in the House and Senate elections is somehow not a direct result of the Administration's failures in Iraq."

However, that would be extravagantly silly - in addition to being a direct contradiction to what voters, candidates on both sides, voters, and the media said at the time.

PS If you want to debate this, I'd be happy to, but I suggest we do it in a new thread in the US category.  This one is about the Saddam hanging video.

There's been some more on the news about this - though fortunately it does not seem to have turned into a large issue.

Arrest over Saddam video hanging - reports
11.01, Wed Jan 3 2007

A man has reportedly been arrested over a mobile phone video of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's hanging.

The Iraqi government has promised to fully investigate how the video footage was taken and leaked onto the internet and how masked guards were allowed to taunt Saddam during his final moments.

The video sparked anger across the world and has forced Prime Minister Tony Blair to comment on the execution for the first time - he has said he fully supports the Iraqi investigation.

It comes as the US military admitted it left security measures at Saddam's execution to the Iraqis and that it "would have done things differently".

Responding to criticism of the execution, US military spokesman Major General William Caldwell said: "It was not our decision as to what occurred but we would have done it differently.

"We had absolutely nothing to do with the facility where the execution took place."

A court official said he was nearly forced to stop the proceedings because of the jeering and chanting of the name of Shi'ite cleric and militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr.

The scenes have sparked outrage among Saddam supporters. Hundreds of Sunni Arab mourners from his hometown have flocked to the village of Awja to visit his grave.

The mourners chanted slogans for Saddam and carried his photos while visiting the burial site. Several later took to the streets, expressing anger and grief..

In retrospect, it seems like hanging him by surprise on the eve of a mayor holiday was a good idea after all.  The proceeding were certainly messy, but there were no large spikes in violence, street demostrations and so forth.

BAGHDAD, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Facing criticism over an illicit video of Saddam Hussein's hanging, Iraqi officials said on Wednesday the execution chamber had been infiltrated by outsiders bent on inflaming sectarian tensions.

The video, apparently filmed on a mobile phone and showing Shi'ite officials mocking the former president on the gallows, has caused angry demonstrations among Saddam's fellow Sunni Arabs and sparked international condemnation.

The Shi'ite-led government, embarrassed by images that show a composed-looking Saddam subjected to sectarian taunts as a noose is put around his neck, has set up a committee to investigate who filmed and leaked the video.

"Whoever leaked this video meant to harm national reconciliation and drive a wedge between Shi'ites and Sunnis," said National Security Adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie, one of a group of 20 officials and other witnesses who were present at the execution at dawn on Saturday.

"There was an infiltration at the execution chamber."

Echoing those accusations, a senior Interior Ministry official said the hanging was supposed to be carried out by hangmen employed by the Interior Ministry but that "militias" had managed to infiltrate the executioners' team.

"The execution was carried out by militias and outsiders. They put aside the team m the Interior Ministry that was supposed to carry it out," the official said.

There were sizable street demonstrations by the Sunnis, and hundreds (if not thousands) of people have already been to his grave.  The Sadrists succeded in creating a martyr out of Saddam, and ensured that sectarian violence will continue.
