If US impose sanctions on Iran again, the position of EU won't matter much. The way I understand it is that sanctions mean that no US company is allowed to do business with Iran. Also, more important, no US company is allowed to business with third party companies which are doing business with Iran. That mean each non-US company will have to choose between doing business with Iran and doing business with US. The opinion of their governments won't matter much. There are few state owned companies in EU. Iranian leaders know that. Russia and China are another matter, they have larger share of state owned companies. It is important to note that pro-Iranian bloc came second in Iraqi elections, not far behind Sadr's bloc. Pro Iranian bloc is lead by Badr militia. They formed a political party and participated in elections. Badr's leader said in interview that he "loves" Iranian Special Forces General Soleimani. Whatever he meant by that, it is obvious that those two support each other. Like other Iraqi political players, Badr came a long way from its beginnings. They started as military wing of SCIRI (Supreme Council of Islamic revolution in Iraq) party, which was formed in Iran by exiled Hakim family of influential Shia clerics. The trinity of Hakim + SCIRI + Badr fell apart. Hakim participated in the elections with his own party. SCIRI changed name into ISCI and participated separately. Badr became the voice of Iran in Iraq and major pro Iranian militia. Iran is not subtle at all when interfering with Iraqi affairs. The border incident with money was mentioned above, but that is not all. Iranian General Soleimani is openly trying to negotiate a pro Iranian alliance which could form a government. Iranians also made a statement that they won't allow Sadr to form a government. As if they don't consider Iraq as its own province. It is significant that they don't care about the impression they made on Iraqi voters. That bullish behavior might be a telltale sign of something else. I think Iran might be preparing a coup in Iraq in near future, with Badr as political force which would take control of Iraq.
