reefdiver, do you have a link to that announcement? It would be interesting to read any detail. You're right in saying it's interesting the Russians saying so in advance. I don't recall them saying this in advance prior to either the retaking of Kuwait in 1991 or the 2003 invasion of Iraq. I doubt either of these could have happened during the Cold War. Cheers.

Link is: http://www.mosnews.com/news/2006/04/20/iranintervene.shtml Russia to Remain Neutral in Case of U.S-Iran Armed Conflict Created: 20.04.2006 11:22 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 11:22 MSK MosNews Russia’s military will not intervene on one side or the other, should the current Iran crisis lead to an armed conflict, the chief of the Russian general staff said, AFP reported Thursday. “You are asking which side Russia will take. Of course Russia will not, at least I as head of the general staff will not, suggest the use of force on one side or the other. Just as with Afghanistan,” General Yury Baluevsky told reporters, referring to the 2001 U.S.-led intervention to oust the Taliban. The general, who heads the Russian armed forces, stressed that he did not think a military scenario was likely in relation to Iran and said that diplomacy was “the proper course”. “In my view a military solution to the Iranian problem would be a political and military mistake,” Baluevsky said. He also confirmed that Russia planned to go ahead with fulfilling an order by Iran for a consignment of Tor-M1 mobile air defense systems, despite U.S. concerns about the deal. “I am absolutely sure that it will be delivered, in accordance with international norms on non-proliferation,” he said. Baluevsky is known for his hawkish position with regard to the United States. In December he accused Washington of “double standards” in its policies towards Iran and North Korea, saying it had closed its eyes to Israel’s nuclear arsenal. Iran insists its nuclear program is purely for civilian energy generation, but the West, led by the United States, suspects the program is a cover for developing atomic weapons.

Its perfect, its about business. They say they won´t interfere with war and now they have made an agreement on uranium enrichment on Russian soil [Iranians still have to give up their plans to enrich uranium in their factories]... Russians really want to have peaceful result, but they won´t get dirty with war if it starts--- Russia is a sure winner in this affair, no matter what happens.

Yesterday, again in Mosnews, Russia was stating it believed that sanctions are not a good idea. If they don't support sanctions, this affair will drag on even longer. As mentioned time and time again on this site, the Russians win here no matter what. Delays, with tensions kept high, mean daily rising oil prices - and $millions more daily to the Russians. They're even winning by selling more weapons to Iran. They may not really want us to go to war, but they certainly want the status quo to continue for a while. More importantly, they are promoting themselves as major power brokers in the area. The following quotes translated from Iran News by http://www.regimechangeiran.com/ on May 19 may cast some doubts on Russias ultimate power: The Iranian Deputy director of security and foreign policy said regarding the UNSC meeting called by Russia: "By calling this meeting, the Russians have clearly shown that all they're interested in is power playing and self-promotion. " and "Our people will never forget the cruelty and exploitation of these Russians in our history...contracts such as the Turkman-Chai and Golestan treaties.". - In other words - the Russians may not have as much influence as they believe. It repeatedly appears that Iran will simply use anyone, in any way, to get what they want.

"In other words - the Russians may not have as much influence as they believe. It repeatedly appears that Iran will simply use anyone, in any way, to get what they want. " This is true to certain extent; the problem for Iranians is the fact that the only way they can avoid the war is to agree to do what Russians have proposed, and that would improve Russians´influence - otherwise they will face US military or lose their face when giving up their nuclear ambitions and letting huge number of foreigners to check their facilities and keep eye on their programs [very very unlikely].

"...do what Russians have proposed...otherwise they will face US military..." That's called "being stuck between a rock and a hard place". As to the Russians not intervening in Iran or as General Baluevsky mentioned, Afghanistan, this would appear to be a continuation of the Cold War "protocol" whereby the US and Russians do not fight each other directly (war by proxy being the only method of confrontation).

I won´t agree if you think that Russians are waging another Cold War, but the pattern of logic is otherwise the same; now the goal is not to "win" USA but to gain as much as possible from the current situation.

Agreed, the Cold War has not returned and yes, the Russians will sit there and make whatever they can out of the situation. Whether it be arms sales to Iran or benefiting from higher oil prices and America's discomfort (the more resources the US has to put into dealing with Iran, the less they have to compete in other areas in which Russia has interests) the Russians will find a way to profit.

thats why we need to let the CIA do tis thing and get inside of Iranian culture once more..let them get just close enough, present the evidence, then attack if need be. Pre-emption is not an option at this time.
