Subject: respect for soldiers

"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country, he won it by making some other dumb bastard die for his." in a soldiers world it's do or die. they are the ones putting their necks on the line day in and day out, they make sacrifics most ppl couldn't even dream of, and they leave their families to protect ours. so if you are one of those ppl bad mouthing them or not supposting them and their cause stop it. until you walk a mile in there boots forget the first ammendment (which by the way they got for you) because you have no right to speak up and judge them.

Lets amend that statement a bit. Agree, its wrong to badmouth and not support the military, especially when they are committed to any kind of operation. You can disagree with the circumstances they are in without violating the above. And you should speak up about things they are doing if you don't understand and are interested in knowing why. Military doesn't have any special exemption to critizism. Beleive me, its just like any other large buearacracy, with all of its inefficiencies.

Dear JG, I sypathise with the sentiment but please let me respectfully disagree. I was a soldier, and as an ifnfantryman I have walked a mile (or so) in their (my) boots. The military in the United States is under civilian control. This has been worked on and faught over since this country began. The civilians that control it are your elected officals and their appointees. Therefore you (as a citizen) and everyone else have a duty (not a right) to become knowledgeable about military policy and let your representatives know your views. If they are doing it wrong, you have an obligation to convince enough others to support your view to get the policy changed. this requires discussion and free speech. This does not require or include critisizing individual soldiers for DOD policies. When the President says "crap", the highest ranking General or Admiral squats and says "What color sir". The constitution comes before the military. The first amendment is part of the constitution. Free speech implies however, that the speech will be informed.
