Why not? No one is satisfied with the selection available. So work off your frustration: give the title and plot summary of your dream war movie.

Id like to see a remake of the Dambusters movie uising all the technology availble to todays film makers.  Should cover more than just that Dam raid though.  617 Squadron did losts more after that which I dont think a lot of folks know about.

To get hollywood buy in however would require a "Token" American I suppose :)

There would be no need for a "token" American. All they would have to do is feature Squadron Leader Henry Melvin Young (DFC and bar) who was born in Pasadena and was killed during the raid.

You'll note he volunteered in 1939.

Sorry that was a cheap shot, Joseph McCarthy DSO, DFC and Bar was also an American.  That being said why hasnt the movie been made then when hollywood can legitimatly have a strong American presence!!!!

The film is allegedly going to be re-made by Peter Jackson who (I think) owns the rights to the film. He has apparently said that the film will make use of details of the raid that were classified when the orginal was made. He wont be drawn though on whether he will include Guy Gibson's dog.

In some respects I hope they don't re-make the film; the original is a classic and doesn't shy away from the cost of the raid. I also feel it will be hard to beat the performances of Michael Redgrave and Richard Todd (who iirc was in 6th Airbourne and took part in the capture of Pegasus Bridge - and so knew what it meant to see men die).

However, if they do remake it I hope the choose the cast carefully to show how young most of the men were (Gibson was 24 or 25). They all look about 35+ in the original.

Essex.

Sorry about bringing up an old post but I just had to put my two cents in on this subject.   I too have always felt that a accurate telling of the Battle off Samar during the Leyte campaign would be awesome.  A good WW I movie would be great perhaps all quiet on the western front but with German actors and obviously in the German language; additionally something covering Verdun would be really interesting I don't think there has ever been anything as close to hell on earth as that battle was.  I'd really like to see a movie that took place during the Philippine-American war, a subject that has in few formats much less film.

If you haven't seen it might I suggest Westfront 1918, made in 1930.  Excellent film, in German with English subtitles.

It might, though there were several quite popular war movies that didn't have token Americans. Cockleshell Heros, Man Who Never Was, Sink the Bismark, etc.

Even though it would be totally fictional and probably low-budget, I think a movie based on the video game "Operation Flashpoint" would be a tremendous movie. They already had pretty interesting characters in that game, and one renegade Soviet officer's personal war threatening to become WW3 is an interesting scenario in the vein of "The Hunt For Red October."

Actually, I do remember the movie about Chalons - I think it was called "Attila" I remember watching parts of it.

Has anyone else noticed that every single SNCO in the US army in WW2 was Telly Savalas? At least according to war movies...

Shirrush    A few war flicks I'd like to see.   10/10/2007 11:23:55 AM
- "Hamilcar", on that Punic war labor dispute episode. After Gustave Flaubert's "Salammbô". In French, subtitled in Hebrew. Without Gerard Depardieu.
- "Khosrau", on the rise and fall of the Sassanid Empire in the Middle-East. In Greek, with Hrvatski subtitles.
Entirely filmed in the IDF Bet-Guvrin range...
- "Ntombela". On the 18th century conquest of South Africa from all three sides simultaneously. In Xhosa with Dutch subtitles. Great outdoors scenes of the Limpopo River valley, assegais, blunderbusses, gore n'guts, San frontal nudity, etc.
-  "Desert Scorpions".  On the "last romantic war". WWII is only beginning. The British out of Egypt are trying to kick the Italian fascists out of Ethiopia, with the help of the armies of states that do not exist anymore (Poland), or do not exist yet (India, Israel). After Hugo Pratt's comic book series. In Amhari, with Italian subtitles.
-  "Porrentruy" A Sci-Fi, "totally unrrealistic" movie about Europe gone bad. A right-wing, foaming-at-the-mouth nationalistic Switzerland lashes out at its increasingly dhimmified and geriatric neighbors with a surprisingly diverse array of weaponry. Special effects every European will enjoy: Basel and Lyon eyesores burning. Lots of tanks, out of their natural environment at the Battle of Chiasso: Ariete vs. Leo II in the mountains. F-18's slugging it out with Mirages and Tornados above Mulhouse and Munich, surrender of the French Eastern Command at Grenoble to the Neuchatel Army Reserve Marching Band. In German with Arabic subtitles. Sponsorship: Thales, Dassault, KMW, Dynamit-Nobel, Nexter and Boeing. Filmed in the Canadian Rockies, where else?

- "Oussouri". Yakov, a Jewish-Moldavian Soviet recruit with a guitar and a solid sense of humor, is sent to the Far East in a disciplinary regiment, with his buddies, who are also a bunch of colorful minority characters (the mix: the unavoidable Armenian, two Georgians, a sad-eyed Lithuanian, and a Siberian-Korean drummer-acrobat) that stick together and successfully avoid hazing and brutality by using their wits and their music. The 1969 Sino-Soviet border clashes are about to erupt. A story of loneliness, comradeship and exile (with Gipsy music) in a very, very strange place. Since this is not an American movie, everybody dies at the end, courtesy of the Chicom artillery. In Russian, with Yiddish and Romanian subtitles.

- "Ayn Jalut" (remake). This most important battle, that took place in what is now Israel in 1260, was the last great Arab victory. The Arabs were, however, commanded by a Mamluk, Baybars. A racist Islamist propaganda animation film, and at least one (Syrian?) feature movie I once saw on Pali TV were made about the event, but neither are any good. Real actors, and real battle scenes with realistic Mongol cavalry and archery in the stunning scenery of the Gilboa hills would make this story an international blockbuster.
