Subject: Question for any Comms Guys regarding SINGARS Radios
ArtyEngineer    5/2/2006 12:08:20 PM
Having an Issue regarding Data Degradation when being transmitted between two SINGARS radios. Do SINGARS have trouble when too close together. About 6ft apart?

Hopefully GD will get off ther ass and seperate antennas tomorrow, and get through there bench tests. They never got round to it today!!!!! I needed 8 tested and certified sets of digital fire contol 12 days ago to be able to meet the fielding schedule for the first army units to get the M777A1 Howitzers. If it turns out that this whole delay has been due to the test set up I am gonna be very very upset. No offence to GD, they got some of the biggest brained people I have ever met, but I wouldnt let some of them cross the road by themsleves.

SINCGARS (SINgle Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System - thats what where talking about here, right?) has a tendency when your operating on the same hop-set in that close proximetry to experience a phenomenon known as (I believe, its been a long time for me)of having their signals moment of inertia cause interference with a very close radio of the same hopset. Sort of like two bells in resonance banging up against each other. You might try takeing off the antenna's and getting devices known as bullet's to attach to each antenae port, put the radio's in low power (you may still need to put an antenuator between the two radio's) and run RF cables (RG-58 I believe) between the two antena ports attached to the bullets. If that doesn't work maybe I can try to give you a POC who would certainly know, perhaps through the syscon if possible.

Just checking.... Did you push that little button on the side of the handset first?

Also first try to use it without the attenuator and if that doesn't work put the attenuator (3 to 10 dB, rf capable) in line and see if that works.

Be meticulous with SINCGARS its easy to get out of sequence and get your test all discombobulated. Good Luck :)

Have solved it!!!! Its a Firmware issue. We got a mix of radios, some with version 6.6 others with version 7.0. the different sets will only send and recieve DATA when set to TACFIRE. Voice comms and simple acknowlegment work fine betwwen all radios on all settings. Mike from Breille, I agree, SINCGARS is "finniky" dont take a big mistake to get all confused!!

If the antennas your using are to close it could cause an issue.

Antennas seperated by 3ft.

This is actually GDATP's problem, but until they pass all there bench tests, they cant give me their gear to install, so I am sitting around with my thumb up my ass. My required ship date isnt moving to the right any, but the time available to do everything required is getting less and less.

Starting to p!ss me and my guys off! Can forsee long days and nights ahead if some people dont get there act together.

been involved with similar engineering tests.
I would have thought that <6ft is too close - as the issue would be emissions leak and cross talk.  although baseline separation on comparable systems is 1m/3ft even then you are talking about seriously EM shielded gear.

the original acceptance trials for the gear would have established min co-location of identical systems and activity modes.
