NZ's 28th Battalion - the Maori Battalion are worth a mention for their march through Italy in WII, they are a warrior people.

but surely the Gurkha's would be held in the highest esteem by the greater audiance.

Your thread title says "Asia-Pacific"
The Ghorkas are in 3 countries.  Brunei have funded their own contingent.  Brunei is in the PACRIM
India has their own regiment.  India is in Asia/Asia Minor

I'm tempted to be patriotic on this one.

How would the Gurkas do in low altitude, near desert conditions?  They are born and raised mountain fighters.

you do realise that Australia isn't just desert and does have some mountains (albeit not too tall..) and Australian troops are often posted to mountainous regions. I'm pretty confident to say there are some peaks in Afghanistan.

IIRC from my primary school geography days, australia has more snow than switzerland during its snow season.  howver, in comparison, we have more hills than mtns. :)

the specials also do mountain env and harsh env training in areas with lots of snow in other countries.
