This site just isn't worth the time it takes to read any more. The front page stories are a joke, and it's simply not worth wading through all the trolls in the forums just to read the few intelligent posts from the ever-shrinking pool of interesting posters. Hopefully I'll run into some of you elsewhere online, but I'm all done here.

In my opinion Strategypage is in a position similar to a company that was pioneered a product some time ago, and now "suddenly" discovers that it has competitors and faces new problems of how to compete. I think this is not unusual and happens regularly to pioneering companies.

Strategypage was for a long time one of the very few (the only?) forum for discussions about strategy. There really wasn't much of an alterantive for Strategy page out there. Now there is a choice between several forums and  it seems to me that the Strategypage forum has yet to find out how to deal with this changed situation.

There are many pioneering companies that had to face these problems. Some have successfully overcome these problems within their existing structure. Some have successfully overcome these problems by re-inventing themselves. And some haven't overcome these problems.

In guess it wouldn't hurt to take a new fresh overall look at Strategypage, the original plan/vision/mission statement, the new situation, etc *1). It also wouldn't hurt to take a look at what the competitors are doing right, what their strengths and weaknesses are.

The "danger" in all of this is could even turn out that the Strategypage owners find out they wanna concentrate on other things in life and decide to shut Strategy page down. That, or the owners find out that they like the challenge of trying to outcompete the "newcomers".

*1) You would have to answer questions similar to:
- What do we want Strategypage to be? (more Debka like?, more CSIS like?)
- What is going to be the Strategypage "core business"?
- What parts of Strategypage are essential to keep for that core business? (Which parts make the most money?)
- What parts of Strategypage are, good to keep?
- What parts of Strategypage are more trouble than they're worth and could be scrapped?
(a dangerous question, because theoretically scrapping the forum could be a good business move)
Etc, etc.

PS
I have looked around a bit at the forum where GF has gone to.
Was not sure it is the forum for me.

Now that most of the remaining knowledgeable posters are gone, it is becoming increasingly clear to me that the moribund Strategypage forum is now officially dead.

I've been here for almost ten years now, and the discussion boards I was participating in have been decaying into irrelevance and inactivity for about three of these.

Also, Bigfella is right, the format sucks wind, but if one does the honorable thing and stops demeaning oneself by using Internet Explorer like a pre-hominid, it mostly works okay.

I have liked, however, the general environment of this board, and I'd be interested in migrating to something basically similar in scope and style.

Any recommendations before you go?

I'm looking for something a little bit more adult than MPnet and a lot less khaki and OPSEC-minded than Fresh.

English is my favorite, but I do not mind either French or Hebrew. (Although using an AZERTYUIOP virtual keyboard and a half-assed spellchecker for French is a major pain in the butt.)

wow, shirrush, you are one of the posters that i respect the most; if you say that SP is dead, well, i guess i have to face facts. i've been here for 10 years and it's been a real education for me since i have no background in military history. it's sad to see everything die off like this.

maybe i'll see everyone on "that other forum".
salam

Le Zookeeper    Frankly there are none similar to SP   1/14/2010 12:27:50 AM
I  see a lot of boards either they are highly military only, or country specific, or very politically specific. I thought SP offered the military information that few sites offered plus the flexibility for a wide range of views to mix with people of different skill level. Its sad to see some obviously knowledgable posters leave, but the turnover is acceptable , if GOG has been here for 10 years - thats long -most marriages do not last that long. There is always someone new and refreshing, just takes an ad campaign at a suitable time. Please even the US/UK banking system got taken over by China- only diamonds are forever.

PS

I have looked around a bit at the forum where GF has gone to.

not sure which you're referring to, but I also don't want to be seen as soliciting for trade when I'm also not interested in doing so.

I do however post on 3 other forums.  One of them I Moderate on and have done so for the last 6 years.  The 2nd I don't have as much time on as I'd like to participate because work is busier than before.  The 3rd is not publicly known and is invitation only (and I have nothing to do with how and who they let in)

I'm happy to tell those who have my email address, but I'm not going to tout for business as the other sites don't need it anyway.  They will slow or grow on their own merit.

I'd add, that this was not a sudden response from me, I took a number of months to come to this decision point, and I did discuss the reasons with one of the Mods few times a while ago.  Its a private site and I respect the right for them to tolerate and act on mebers at their discretion.  It is however different from the relatively active moderation that used to be present 2-3 years ago.  That's an issue for me, not for them.

At a personal view, if I see what I regard as more effective moderation in the spirit of the common Forum codes of conduct, then I'm happy to return.  That's not a gun to anyones head - it's posting "life".

Those who know me have my dets, those who use their initiative know how to get to me. :)

Don't go, this place needs you more than you know.  The trolls will be there, but there are further more readers that really appreciate what you guys show.  You have a big following.  I would hate to see you guys go, and I know I speak for a lot of people.

This site has been greatly polluted by trolls and fan boys like One five echo, Rufus, Stobie wan, Herald/Hamilcar and others.
I have unless them, provided serious public links including official DoD site like.mil (I know immediately where to search to public information without betraying any french confidential information).
None of these trolls have provided serious information.
I felt allowed to speak on Rafale since I did not work directly on it, but my technical background allow me to do fair analysis on public information without violating french laws.

On my credential, I have slightly modified experience, some company names, and age, to blur any search for my name (since I don't want to get any problem) but it is very close to  that.

I respect some writer like Gf0012 or Darth since I have never any insults or trolling from them.

I have tried sincerly to provide open information like a serious defense journalist would do.
Years has passed, and all my information proved to be true like ability to fire a BVR missile relying only on geolocation by ESM suit like F22 did in UAE according to weekly air et cosmos.
If Sysop remember well, it was denied for years here.

However I have spend too much time to write here and it is now irrational and I have lose my composure facing those rednecks.
I should have stayed away from this site even I was enjoying to demonstrate I was right (especially on Rafale) after leaving few years.
Still we have insults of trolls like above which have never given any serious information or analysis.
Those people should be collectively banned to restore seriousness of SP which was a great site.
I quit since I can not bear those low trolls which are unable to read a document and acknowledge their errors.
