This site just isn't worth the time it takes to read any more. The front page stories are a joke, and it's simply not worth wading through all the trolls in the forums just to read the few intelligent posts from the ever-shrinking pool of interesting posters. Hopefully I'll run into some of you elsewhere online, but I'm all done here.

I guess when one leaves another arrives. I am new and after seeing the complaints on this thread I feel guilty.

I am a college student in history. I specialize in politics and foreign policy...so, when such a topic comes up i'll jump in. Unfortunately I am not so well versed in weapon systems, I hope to change that (make that a resolution for the year). I am sort of regretting posting the "ideal army" thread, it was too soon for me but, it is challenging me to know more and defend my ideas.

I know Phaid is gone, but lets bring in a new generation of posters. I am truly learning so much from competent posters such as LB and French Stratege, and others I have yet to encounter.

Be warned. Hamilcar should not be on your trusted list.

Anyone who starts out with French Stratege on his trusted list is in need of major course-correction.  Hopefully you'll read some of the past mega-threads and come to your senses.

GF leaving is a disaster.

Hugo    Goodbye..   1/13/2010 3:16:51 AM
Gentlemen,
They say all good things come to an end and my years here at StrategyPage have been enjoyable and rewarding.  I've learnt a great deal and have enjoyed discussions with many of you.  I wish you all the best for the future.

Farewell,

Hugo

Shirrush    OK, what now?   1/13/2010 4:18:07 AM
Now that most of the remaining knowledgeable posters are gone, it is becoming increasingly clear to me that the moribund Strategypage forum is now officially dead.
I've been here for almost ten years now, and the discussion boards I was participating in have been decaying into irrelevance and inactivity for about three of these.
Also, Bigfella is right, the format sucks wind, but if one does the honorable thing and stops demeaning oneself by using Internet Explorer like a pre-hominid, it mostly works okay.
I have liked, however, the general environment of this board, and I'd be interested in migrating to something basically similar in scope and style.

Any recommendations before you go?
I'm looking for something a little bit more adult than MPnet and a lot less khaki and OPSEC-minded than Fresh.
English is my favorite, but I do not mind either French or Hebrew. (Although using an AZERTYUIOP virtual keyboard and a half-assed spellchecker for French is a major pain in the butt.)

Hello Shirrush!  Actually, not having seen you here in a long while was a factor in my decision.  I thought you'd left some time ago.
I can't really make any recommendations as to improvement.  I think my decision was motivated in large part by the increasing flight of posters I enjoyed, the decreasing activity of the remaining posters I enjoyed, and the slow realisation on the US boards that my threads / posts were not considered valuable by the community (these are not criticisms but merely observations).  I also dislike the format here somewhat however the trolls never bothered me greatly because I restrain myself and often skip their posts, finding that they themselves do more damage to their reputations than any refutation could.  Thus those issues weren't bothering me genuinely.  However, it seems they bother others and GF and other respected posters leaving were serious blows I think to my enjoyability of SP - so indirectly they are also issues that have contributed to my decision I suppose.

Wish you, your family and your country the best of luck in the future  Shirrush and I hope that our paths cross again someday.

...oh, I misunderstood your post.  Recommendations to alternatives I unfortunately do not have.  I believe GF is considerably active on other boards and I could ask him for alternatives and get back to you if you'd like.

Shirrush    Thanks Hugo;   1/13/2010 4:56:48 AM

You are right pointing out the decreasing activity of the Israel board in particular. This was due IMO to the defection of most of its veteran participants, and to the posting of barely-commentable SP articles often stating the obvious, or presenting what amounts as old news. There has been no mention, for instance, of the IOC announcement of the Iron Dome C-RAM missile system earlier this week, and this indeed was a topic well worth discussing, at least on the Air Defense board.
In any case, I still do not know where to migrate to, but I sincerely hope to meet you there once I've made my choice. Let us keep the same handles so we know who's who, awright?
All the best to you and to your gang.

Thankyou.  You're right, the Israel board has become very quiet.  A friend and I are hoping to visit your country within the next couple of years - we are both fascinated with the innovations in water saving agriculture that is being made there amongst other things so I look forward to the opportunity of seeing Israel first hand.
I will make an ad hoc posting on the Israel board in case GF has any further sites of interest.  I'll certainly keep the same handle should I find myself anywhere else.

Good luck.
