Subject: French Foreign Legion, some additional info
FCUS    11/6/2008 11:43:42 AM
I was watching the Military Channel last night (most biased channel ever) and there was a documentary on the french foreign legion. I heard a tremendous amount of BS, the biggest one being ALL LEGIONAIRES ARE FOREIGN. I also read the same BS in posts on SP. I looked up some numbers and found this. Soldiers, in 2007: - 24% french - 18% from eastern europe and balkans - 15% other western world countries (US, UK, germany, etc) - 14% from the the Slav world (russia, something-istan countries) - 9% Latin America - 9% Asia - 7% Africa - 4% Arab world (i know it's not very precise) NCO: you can become NCO only if you re-enlist and it's not granted. 1 outta 4 legionnaires become a NCO when they enlist. I could not find numbers on their ethnic origins. Officers: 90% of them are from Saint Cyr, 10% are former NCO's meaning about 90% of them are french and around 10% are naturalized french. You have to be a french citizen to be an officer in the FFL. 10% of Legion Officers started as simple Legionnaires meaning they have been in the legion for at least 15 years (!!!). In addition: - your criminal background will be checked, a criminal will not be allowed to enlist - 140 nationalities in 2007, you may apply for french citizen ship after 3 years if you enlisted with your real name. - you can join between the age of 17 and 40, 5 years enlisment contract - the legion today is 413 officers, 1741 NCO's and 5545 legionnaires divided in 11 regimental formations

You understood correctly. I think it's very possible since Europe must accept that specialization is now the name of the game and France is best placed to assume this responsibility. As I said, to make it more palatable, reps of the EU can be integrated/recruited and if I'm not mistaken, there is a Spanish FL too, right? Perhaps they could also form part of the new Rapid Response Force. WIth the EU collectively funding it, it could be greatly expanded while drawing upon French experience and expertise.

I agree with you, the FFL could be in charge of training a rapid response force, knowing that France has training facilities in the desert, jungle and mountain (the alps I mean) and has the biggest firing range in europe for anti tank missiles, artillery, etc (arf I can't remember the name,  I just know it's in southern france though). It  makes sense.
However, what language will they speak?
English seems to be the most obvious response but a too little proportion of french soldiers speak it good enough, I suppose its the same for the spanish, italians, greeks and portugese to name a few.
The germans and nordic countries are more likely to be better in english, I know that from personnal experience.
British soldiers obvisoulsy speak english but the british army does not need to be trained they have the best training in the world and they already use some of France's  training facilities (maybe so do the germans, italians, etc but I do not  know about it).
I suppose if everyone makes the effort of speaking english it could work. In the worst case scenario they could use translators...
Know concerning the equipement...there is not problems  when it comes to helis and missiles,  plus european fleets have a good interoperability (again, is that a word?). But when it comes to infantry carriers and tanks ? Everyone brings its own?
It's a good idea but I still have problem realizing how it could be done. But again, my knowledge of international joint operations is very very very small so I might be missing something.
GoG you should write to the European Comission, pretend to be from the DoD^^

This information is not so wrong, however there might be some misunderstanding due to translation:
The term "légionnaire" only means the lowest rank soldiers - and these guys aer indeed foreigners. So if you translate this term with "legioanires" then the statement is correct - however if you mean by "legioanires" all members of the legion then the statement is wrong.
