Le Zookeeper    7/15/2008 12:18:09 AM
As one of the big 5 France was a superpower for a while, but no Rafale sales, Iran nukes, etc and it seems to that France is no longer a power. Last customer for Rafale -India seems to go to F-18? Is it finally over for France as superpower??

Nuclear weapons ended a war with Japan, in theory they could have done the same thing with in a war with Germany.

The Japanese surrender because of the Russian thrust into China not because of the Nuclear weapons, after the nuke the majority of the Japanese military were willing to fight on BUT after the Russian advance they decided to surrender. Do some detailed research.

The cabinet meeting over the night of 9-10 August was deadlocked with six in favor of surrender under certain conditions, three to fight on until after the final battle had shown Japan's will, and with five neutral members.  Issues discussed that night were:  that the Emperor must remain; that Japan must disarm her own troops and not surrender arms to a foreign power; and that Japan must try her own war criminals.  Word came during the meeting that a second city had been destroyed by atomic attack.  The meeting was moved to an audience with the Emperor who listened to the arguments on both sides and concluded that the time had come to "bear the unbearable".  The Emperor had no direct authority other than the loyalty of those who would listen to him.  A diplomatic message was drafted to the Allies describing Japan's conditions of accepting the Potsdam proclamation.

Maybe you need to do a little research. Maybe somewhere besides Russian history books? It is clear nothing you said is correct and the clear reason for surrender was the destruction of the second Japenese city by nuclear weapons. Not some Russian attack on a bunch of helpless troops left over in Manchuria. Now go have another shot of Vodka.

"the Japanese military were willing to fight on BUT after the Russian advance they decided to surrender."

Please note, a tremendous amount of Japanese cultural ignorance was used in the creation of the above sentence....

France is not a superpower, that was/is only the US and former sovietic union.

Nevertheless france is a great power, as long as france economy ranks in the top 10 and as long as french SSBN, with up to date technology, are lurking around with intercontiental missiles equiped with MIRV and proven H bombs.
