Subject: Stealth detecting radar
Gerry    3/19/2008 6:24:37 PM
Rumers seem to abound on new Russian radars that can detect steathy aircraft. I.E. S-500 ADS, Yet I cannot find any definitive articles that deal with the technology. Is this a myth (born from wishful thinking) or real technology in the works?

Northrup-Grumman put together a paper on this topic a while ago. It addresses many of the topics discussed in this thread,
and " a link to it. (Warning- PDF)
I'll summarize two important points, though- first, detecting a LO plane with older early warning radars isn't the same thing as shooting it down; you still need to lock a fire control radar on it. Second, the bistatic concept (which includes the mythical "celldar") isn't very useful either, especially as LO aircraft are designed to channel reflected energy into a few narrow "lobes" and would only offer a very short, transitory return to any given receiver, bistatic or otherwise.

As a further aside, current mobile phone systems use a very low transmit power, especially when compared to a radar site. This is a big disadvantage when dealing with stealth. You would need a massive increase in infrastructure to get anywhere, and the results would be inferior to spending a similar amount on more conventional radar sets.

All of the fuss over radar and stealth is simply wasted talk.

I think that would fall into the category of wishful and hopeful thinking. Not the type of information I would want to enter a battle on.

Again, IIRC, During WWII the Germans and others at times employed huge sound gathering megaphone/microphone type devices to detect the sound of incoming aircraft. With arrays of these they could triangulate and determine headings of incoming aircraft and deploy defences appropriately.

it was the italians who were the tech experts when it came to acoustic arrays.  russians also had a shot at it post ww2 pre cold war (circa korean war)
