Subject: TAK-PAK

Does anyone have any experience with a thing called TAK-PAK mobile command system? Our brass wants to buy this thing for us. It supposedly includes, 300Mhz laptop computer, 3 RF data lines, printer, fax, copier, digital camera, scanner, cellular telephones, satellite telephones, GPS system, GIS system, and a portable fingerprint capture. Is it rugged enough and does it function as advertised? Any comment would be appreciated, because I haven't been able to come up with any reference on the internet.

Well,

?   The computer is SLOW, and probably more than a few years out of date.  The rest of the equipment is probably of the same vintage, so:
Better make sure that spare parts are available.
Hardware upgrade path?
Make sure that the purchase price includes a maintenance contract for the anticipated like of the system.

What is the operating system?  The security software?
How well can the system be secured against external hackers?
Type and quantity of external ports?
Storage capacity?
?   Not sure about the RF data lines.  Are these just cables?

?   Printer, copier, scanner, and fax are now usually a single box.  Not sure if they have a rugged version for field use yet.

?   It's getting hard to find a cell phone that does not have a digital camera and GPS built in.  What may really be needed is a portable cell phone repeater to set up a network separate from the civilian one.

?   GIS systems are software and databases, not hardware.  The important part is having access to the right databases.

?   The only parts that may be tricky are the satellite communications and the finger print scanner.
