Subject: What do you carry?
RockyMTNClimber    1/4/2008 6:03:10 PM
Many of the Strategy Page posters are LEO and carry weapons both on and off duty. I am long retired from that game but I have retained my CCW ever since. Normally I carry a loaded weapon, either a snub nose hamerless revolver in a Kramer pocket holster OR (rarely) an G19 in a IWB holster, a heavy folding knife on a pocket clip on the weak side, a cell phone, and that is it. My fashion sense just does not allow me to pack a Bat-Belt rig to go about my daily routines in the field or office. My work takes me all over the state of Colorado and frequently into the beast, downtown Denver. I keep a Surefire in my coat pocket at night and a very complete survival pack that two people can live off for a week in my vehicles. I do not carry spare mags or speedloaders but I have recently spoken to some COP-er friends (both active and retired) who are carrying two guns off duty and multiple magazines. Some are preaching 3 mags in possesion at all times. For those of you who carry, EITHER civilian or off duty LEO, What do you carry and why. For the rest what would you carry out and amongst them if you could. Check Six Rocky

Do you guys really carry guns on you all the time? Do you have to get a special permit?

I live near downtown LA and walk regularly and have not packed anything. I am not anti-gun or anything but I have never felt the need to carry one. I can run fast.

Yes, I pretty much carry a gun all of the time.  As a police officer I don't need a special permit because Federal law allows commissioned police officers to carry a concealed weapon anywhere in the country.
Obviously most of the time I haven't need a gun either when I've went to the hardware store or the movies, and I can run pretty fast as well, but I don't feel that my duties and responsibilities as a cop end when I clock out for the day.  I've seen too many instances where innocent people were going along minding their own business when things have suddenly went to hell.  I refuse to be a victim, and refuse to stand by helplessly while others are gunned down by a psycho, terrorist, or even a cracked out robber.

I know all that may sound a little paranoid, but after strapping on a gun nearly every day for over thirteen years it simply becomes part of your wardrobe.

Ok, if you guys are cops I understand.

But you guys need to see this the way I do. I would be TERRIFIED to carry a gun. I am not sure if I would get in trouble for carrying it let alone using it. It is not worth the risk to me. I guess that is a shame, but there are morons out there I don't want packing.

If you do not have a concealed handgun permit, yes you will get in trouble for carrying it.  If you do have a concealed handgun permit and abide by whatever restrictions it places on carrying, then no you will not get in trouble for carying it.  Of course, there's some added risk that carrying it will get you into trouble, but you won't get into trouble for carrying it.  Alles klar?

I have heard a lot about American concealed carry laws, but what about open carry, such as with the old cowboy gun belt?  Is that still legal in many states?

Off duty:
- One pistol: G37, G22, or S&W 60.  Sometimes with a reload but not always.
- Two knives: one simple pocketknife, usually a Schrade; one tactical duty folder, always a Benchmade.
- One cell phone.
- Sometimes a kubaton with an OC canister inside but not always.
- Sometimes handcuffs but not always.

On duty:
-One pistol: a G37 with one spare magazine.
-Two knives: same as above.
-One cell phone: same as above.
-One kubaton with an OC canister inside, always.
-One pair of hancuffs, always: usually chains but sometimes hinge.

Most of this I've never needed.....but in 43 static line parachute jumps I never used my reserve parachute, not has my wife ever used my life insurance.

In Colorado it is legal to carry unconcealed (or have a loaded handgun in your car) and you must have proper licensing to carry concealled. Other states too like Arizona, Wyoming, and a few others it is legal to go cowboy. Many states don't allow it. Vermont allows open or concealed carry without restriction.

The states and jurisdictions with the most restrictive ownership and carry laws are the ones with the highest crime rates. Like Washington D.C.. It is probably easier to own a handgun in UK than in Wash.D.C. and it has the worst crime rate in the US.

I should point out that I started my first tour with investigations on January 1, so my belt is lighter these days.  I also often have a Motorola radio with me on duty but not always.

I think that you'll find that it is vastly harder to legally own a handgun in the UK than anywhere you care to name in the US.

Carrying one for self-defence is only slightly harder, since the most common possession of a legal handgun is military, police or government personnel with a requirement for self-defence.

Handguns are effectively banned, with only a few exceptions to the rules. Even the olympic pistol team has to practice abroad.

Off-hand (as in with admittedly few actual facts in my possession), I'd guess that very few states, if any, have state laws against open carry of a firearm state-wide.  However, I'd also guess that many cities do have laws against it.  Also, I'd guess that most cities and states do have laws against any firearms possession in the vicinity of certain facilities like government buildings, schools, and churches, for example.

Glock in .357SIG, with 2 extra mags.  Twelve-guage pump and a Ruger mini-14 in the car.
Off duty, a .45ACP Colt Govt. Model, with some minor modifications.
