Subject: Most militarily incorrect movie

My vote is for Godzilla, with Apache attack helicopters firing cannon mounted on the sides of the fuselage and ending with an entire stadium blown up with what looked like a few Harpoons.

Kelly's Heroes and MASH (even if I enjoyed them)
The masses of 1950s-1970s movies which found the M47 or T34 could represent every possible make of tank imaginable.
The Patriot - for showing Banastre Tarleton and his fellow Brits as evil war criminals .,..

kalaloch    "American" Godzilla, AirWolf, and so on   8/31/2007 9:08:39 AM
I was unmitigatedly pissed when the Big Lizard was brought down on the Brooklyn Bridge by a mere pair of F/A-18's firing Mavericks. Anyone who's spent any time watching 'Zilla knows that the best you can hope for is to run him off for a awhile, or get him to nap for a while. Kill it, with two Mavericks? Sacriledge!

IIRC, that Bell bird featured in AirWolf could only go supersonic after jettisioning the rotor assembly. Never mind that the critter would have had to have a hell of a TWR to stay airborn, much less navigable. I suppose we were to believe the bird's sponsons could provide adequate lift.

"Stealth" was another bright gem...when the UCAV is able to lower a rotary weapons despenser into the slipstream, as it spins about selecting the proper weapon for release.

Two ground views of supposedly some section of the parking ramp at Nellis for "Independance Day" show such a cross-breed of aircraft (none of which are configed in agressor paint), that it makes one wonder if they didn't drag out some spares from DM.

And...the next time to watch "A Bridge Too Far", watch closely. Most of the Shermans are models mounted on VW chassis (you can actually see four wheels beneath the treads), and the two scenes that capture an M-60A1 MBT amoungst the Shermans on the road.

There's just too many. I especially love how they make small caliber explosive rounds act like 16-inch HE.

The Patriot - Minimized and ridiculed French contribution to the success of the American Revolution

The Last Samurai - Germany was primarily responsible for training the Japanese Army in the latter part of the 19th century, not the U.S.

Battle of Britain - Compares total Luftwaffe strength to RAF Fighter Command strength giving an erroneous impression of the size of the respective air forces

Tora, Tora, Tora - Indicated that the message that the Japanese delivered after the Pearl Harbor attack (supposedly due to the slowness of a typist) was a Declaration of War.  Actually, the message broke off negotiations, but it was not a formal declaration of war.

U.S. movies such as "The Lost Battalion", "To Hell and Back" (Audie Murphy - Won most medals of any U.S. serviceman in WW2), or "Sergeant York" were about specific, exceptional units or individual soldiers.  The fact that they tended to kill, or capture, large numbers of the enemy was what made them exceptional.  If Germany makes a movie about Baron Von Richtoffen I would expect to see one German airman shooting down scores of  Allied planes.  With regard to generic U.S. war movies you have a point.

The starship troopers movie was started as a different project. It was a movie called "bug kill" or something. During a screening someone said it reminded them of starship troopers and the producers liked that idea. So they did some monor changes and rebranded the film as ST. That is why it has nothing to do with the book.

Most of the time I'm just a reader here...

Does Airwolf qualify?

- Helicopter flying Mach 1+

- uses Mavericks and Hellfires to shoot down planes (not sure if you can shoot down slow moving helicopters with them)

- nuclear tipped Shrikes!

- armoured and doesn't even get scratches when hit

- always using radar, no one detects that

- retractable gun barrels

- maintenance is done as a part time job between kicking some bad guys a... and running a regular helicopter service

- maybe more things to add to the list, it's been a while...

...but I liked it!

About airwolf, i saw last night an incredible one :

Airwolf targeting a russian SSBN, with the SSBN launching a balistic missile... flying around to hit airwolf like a AA missile :D
and at the end, airwolf sinks the submarine, WHILE DIVED, with one maverick.

I couldn't stop laughing for a while. Airwolf was cool when i was a kid, but now...

Just saw this again over the weekend with Clint Eastwood as the lead.

Recalled when I originally saw it that I took it as none too serious fare.  The movie paid some attention to detail.  Maybe its a filming requirement as opposed to sound tactics to have the Marines in various units on the move all bunched up.

But Mario Van Peebles and others firing their M-16s on Full Auto from the hip was careless attention to detail and just looks stupid.

Recon!

Didn't he use a claymore to blow up an entire warehouse in this one?
