Subject: .357 Magnum stopping power
GOP    3/12/2007 10:24:42 PM
Whatsup guys? What kind of Self defense round is the .357 mag? Some of you may know that I'm 17, but I'm a gun nut, and love the S&W 686 with 4 inch barrel in .357 mag/.38 special. I'd use the gun almost completely for shooting at the range, but when I turn 21 I plan on getting my CCW license/pistol permit so it would then be used legally as a self-defense weapon. Just curious what your thoughts on the round is. The reason I like it is because it's stainless steal, and therefore won't rust (we own a fishing boat and it may be used by my Dad on the boat as a Self-Defense weapon). It's also highly, highly thought of in the NSW community (most SEALs don't like the the Sig P226 Navy, because they basically rust at the sound of "salt water")

Yimmster,  too bad you can't use your "inherantly accurate" benchrest round, the 7.62X39!
Don't take heated debate too seriously?  I recall you leaving in a huff over my questioning a few of your more naive statements in another thread.

In all seriousness, why not use a simple 22mag ? cheaper ammo, you don't need knock down power, and you don't reload.

Erm, because .22 is a rimfire round, and so for rimfire competitions, as opposed to gallery rifle and prcticle compesitions, where a minimum muzzle energe is required by the rules?
And no, I don't take the internet too seriously, hence why I left the other thread.  If you feel you can prove how the 7.62mm Soviet round is inherintly poor in accuracy, go and make a thread about it, maybe someone will be gullible enough to believe you.

Other than that, don't go trying to call people out on the internet, it makes you look a cretin.  I mean, what are you going to do, suggest we go outside?

Just poking a little fun, Yim.  Don't get so defensive.  No need to take everything so seriously.

rocky for every one of those cases of self defense i could post a case of a domestic dispute gone bad because a gun was handy or a case of kids playing with pop's favourite home defense gun.  neither set of anecdotal incidents really advances the discussion does it?

You could, but you would have to re-use your "cases of domestic dispute gone bad," your "cases of kids playing with pop's favorite home defense gun" over and over again because there isn't anywhere close to a 1:1 correspondence. The statistics do no support your assertion. Not even close.

Those pistol caliber bolt-action guns look like they'd make a nice silenced short range sniper rifle, if chambered for .45 ACP.

Yeah a De Lisle type rifle would be fun, but althouth suppressors are legal in the UK, you need good reason, and I don't think target shooting / noise pollution is acceptable.

Silencers are perfectly legal here in Colorado (along with full auto weapons) provided you submit to a additional back ground check that takes about 6 months and costs about $300.00.

i think others have said it best go to a shop and handle as many weapons as you can and find one that fits your hand and the way you intend to carry it best. if your intent is to keep it hidden then size will be a major factor... weight should be looked at also if you cant carry it easy then your not likly going to and its not much use to you setting in your house. speaking for myself, when i go into the hills i always take some sort of firearm one of my rifles (chance to target shoot too) or my 1911, now would i use the 1911 as my conciled carry no its too heavy for one and 2nd it would be hard for me to hide. if i wanted something to carry concealed i would have something much smaller with me that also fit my large hands well.

also if more people were raised to respect "guns" like you we wouldnt have a problem with them. so many people are scared to death about them its crazy. its funny that people think that a law will keep someone from having them while they are commiting other crimes.... might i add that nearly anything can be used to kill (like a car) just because something is used wrongly dosent mean it should be baned.

RockyMTNClimber    Gun Fighting explained   3/31/2007 5:16:53 PM

USMC Rules for Gunfighting

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Your life is expensive.

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough nor using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

9.5 Use a gun that works EVERY TIME.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them).

19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

23. Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with a ".4"

Navy Rules to Gunfighting

1. Go to Sea

2. Send the Marines

3. Drink Coffee
