Subject: Gun Porn: United States Navy Mark 14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle (EBR)
HYPOCENTER    2/6/2007 7:30:29 PM
Gun porn, you know you like it. This week, it's the M-14. I'm so in love with this weapon I consider it to be a national treasure. Anyway, it's still in use by some services. And I know the SEALS still use it (It's been updated of course) which says quite allot. Without further ado, here are photos of the the most bad-ass looking assault rifle in the world, Mk 14 Mod 0 EBR: (see post below)

The modern Crazy Horse M14 rifles Smith Enterprise, Inc. builds for the US military deliver AK47 Reliability and Sub MOA 7.62mm x 51 Accuracy.
These SEI rifles, SDM, SASS & M21 A5/A6 Counter IED rifles are ultra reliable, battle proven in desert conditions and require little maintenance.

You can type such claims all you want, but the reality is that it simply is not true.  The M14 in the desert certainly has not provided "AK47 reliability," nor proven "ultra reliable."  It has proven to be extremely maintenance intensive to even match M16/M4 accuracy, much less provide something improving on that.
The track record is pretty clear -- the preferred answer to whatever questions that the M14 answers is another weapon system, be it an SR-25, SPR, or what ever else.  It's nice that a mediocre design got a little last bit of time in the sun, but it's a substandard weapon system we'll be well rid of when it's gone.

You can keep spreading falsehoods all you want, but what you say does not apply to the SEI Crazy Horse rifles. They are just as I have described and better. The Crazy Horse system is battle proven in desert warfare. It has proven itself to be ultra reliable. It requires little maintenance. And it is extremely accurate.
The track record is clear - growing numbers of M14 rifles are being modernized by SEI.

The M14 is a solid design and it will be in service for many years to come, but it needs to be modernized by SEI to remain viable.

What a travesty. Taking a rifle that handles as good as a Winchester Model 12, and turn it into  ... THAT.

H2O MAN    Still waiting . . .   9/29/2007 8:32:47 AM
After working with just about every M14 stock available (new&old) I'm still waiting on a mil spec fiberglass/synthetic E2 stock.
An SEI Crazy Horse build with a medium heavy 18.0" barrel on an LRB M25 receiver would be my choice.

It seems that the M14 mechanisim and platform is really stable and accurate, so much so that the M14 with a scope can even be used as a sniper rifle in the SVD class.

But for such a promising platform, why is it that when down sized to the 5.56mm in the form of the Ruger mini 14, the accuracy of the 5.56 is inferior to the M16????????

Could a longer barrel provided better accuracy for this reliable platform?

I think that Ruger does not build them for accuracy. It is a very good gun that is sort of the AK47 of 5.56's, it retails in US$ for around $550.00 +/-.

If you were willing to give Ruger $1,250.00 a copy for them I bet they could give you a higher quality barrel and action that would be very competitive with any 5.56 out there.

That would be $250 more than the colt M16 type rifles. But fair enough if there is M16 like accuracy without the m16 jams.

I do not mean to demean the good little rifle. It is good enough for Gov't work as they say and fun to shoot!

The issue of accuracy and the Mini-14 is that of the weight of the factory barrel and the fixed piston gas system.  When fired, there is an oscillation/shockwave created by the detonation of the cartridge (this happens in all firearms).  The combination of the light barrel and the gas system on the Ruger product creates circumstances for up to 4 MOA.  The after market fix has been the installation of a heavier/thicker barrel, which can get this down to 1.5 and under MOA.  Ruger is also now offering a change in the form of a thickened barrel past the gas port, they call this a compensator which dampens out the oscillation effects at the muzzle.
