To put it simply- why do we have all these crashes? Helicopters, planes- what's up? My son is in the service and I told him he wasn't allowed to get in any hellicopters. He told me he'd be sure and tell his CO that his mom said, he couldn't. Linda

Not only the helicopters but a considerable portion of the military inventory is overage and overworked thx to the budgetary reductions during the Clinton admin, as well as a reluctance to make maintenance a priority vs a "new toy".

There's also the fact that we ask more of our military than most countries. Our stuff could all still be brand spankin' new if all we did was sit around with all our resources still in the US. Unfortunately, we're flung all across the world. Constantly shuttling troops and equipment around the world around the clock takes its toll, even on the best troops and best equipment in the world. Still, patching up the maintenance shortfalls of the Clinton era sure wouldn't hurt. Lessening commitments in non-essential areas would help, too, but when you really dig into all of our commitments, most of them could be considered "essential" by some standard or other. I do think that we put too much emphasis on personnel and deployment costs and not enough on research, training, and maintenance, though. We don't have some God-given right to a superior army; we earn it. If we stop committing to it, it will falter; if we stop committing to making it better, then others will catch up. --Phoenix Rising
