Subject: Logistics, Supply and Other Support Chains

I am wondering about how many support troops at each level of support (combat support, combat service support, administrative, contractor support, etc.) and of what types are usually required to support one infantry combat soldier or one tank or one platform or one artillery piece or one platform of a different type. Also... how many of these support troops & civilian contractors have to be deployed with the soldier/platform and how many can provide support services from back 'home'?

That depends on the level! My personal rule of thumb is: To move one level up, You take 3 units together, their staffing will be 2/3 of the next higher level: 3 companies of 150 men that is 450 men which make a batallion about 700 men. This includes logistics. Before everybody says "WRONG": It is a rule of thumb and first order approximation.

Well, thanks Thomas! I like rules of thumb, because they allow you to make quick calculations/approximations, even if the accuracy is not great - they are at least a starting point.

What are the generally accepted supply needs in terms of category/type of goods/fuel/ammunition/spare parts/etc. and their respective quantities for: Light forces (say companies) Medium forces (say companies) Heavy forces (say companies)
