Subject: Arab W.M.D. threats

The Arab press is given to psychotic breaks with reality. Nothing new in that. More than 20 years after the Six Day War, you could still find occasional citations in the Western press about solemn Arab claims that it was actually America which fought and defeated the Arabs. Directly, not metaphorically. But, with regard to the latest story about the floating of a trial balloon in the Palestinian press about acquiring and using W.M.D., it really does need to be pointed out how this would play in Israel. Listen up, folks: Any use, or threat of use, of poison gas, bioweapons, or nuclear weapons on Israel would be immediately and automatically interpreted by Jews as a direct threat to revive the Holocaust. Literally. It may well be that the Palestinians are merely working on a continuation of a policy to try to goad Israel into a reaction which would alienate foreign poweres. That's really besides the point, when they get to this level. This is the line of no return for Israel. Pearl Harbor, PLUS. If they actually WANTED to find a way to make Israel willing to wage total war, to destroy all Arab presence west of the Jordan River, this is a pretty good bet to accomplish that end. It's well to remember that there wasn't a single country in the world which lifted a finger to prevent the Holocaust. In face of this kind of threat - if believed - Israel would be strongly inclined to feel that ANY foreign objections or complaints or promises or guarentees were worthless, insulting, and besides the point. The real concern should be Syria. They have a scud missle to scud launcher ratio 2:1. This would allow them to fire all their scuds in a few minutes. In addition, they have been making sarin and cyclosarin from pesticides. They apparently think they can overcome air superiority by massive amounts of surface to surface missiles armed with chemical warheads. But like you said, Israel would most likely retaliate in nuclear terms, although they would have to use a relatively weak weapon because Damascus is so close to the border, and the fallout would likely contaminate most countries in the region
