Subject: High Explosive Shells vs tanks

Would 155mm artillery shells, upon a direct hit, be able to knock out a M1A2 Abrams? The top armor is somewhat weak, but i dont really know if raw HE has the power to do so. Could 208mm do so if 155mm couldn't?

Of course.  155mm shells have been converted into IEDs which have destroyed M1A2 keel up.  Think of a tank as a large kettle drum:  blast waves transfer into the tank interior as if a drum struck by a drumstick from above.  These create pressure differentials that attempt to equalize rapidly as among the weakest barriers separating the two environments.  Equipment and personnel inside the tank can suffer catastrophic damage as a consequence.  M1A2 was designed to withstand small cannon rounds, HEAT, squash and penetrators.  Dump the energy stored in 155mm onto M1A2 and she or her crew or both may fail to survive.  It's still a leading-edge tank.  0.02
