I think its interesting how only the French in this thread seem to think the leclerc is the best tank. And before you go calling me an american hypocrite, let me give you MY picks for the top 5 (i cant decide after 5) 1) Challenger 2 (best armor, good gun, good electronics) 2) Leo 2 (good armor, best gun, NEWEST electronics) 3) M1A2 (good gun, good armor, god electronics, fast tank) 4)LeClerc (good gun, good speed, good armor) 5) Merkava 4 (good armor)

I think the french lecrec is the best,if you need mobility combined with firepower to out-manuever the enemy.

Dudes!! I have one simple answer to all your things...The Russian T-90S super battle tank wihch India has procured (450 of them) and India got tech transfer to produce it at home as well. This Super battle tank can take on any tank in the world. With Israeli electronics also on this. This seems to be the most formidable tank today.

The T-90S is just a rehashed collection of Soviet era problems. Yes, it does have thermals and improved armor, but: -- It still can't hit a thing at long range, which is why it has to use through-barrel ATGMs. -- It still uses an under-turret carousel autoloader. Its armor is not *that* good (which we know because it comes with all those active defense and ERA gizmos to compensate for basically inferior armor), and so when it takes a hit, much like a T-72 or T-80 it will quickly generate three widows. On the plus side, it is cheap compared to M1A1s (or better), Challenger 2, Leo 2, and even Le Clerc, Merkava, etc. It also comes from a nation which is more than happy to sell its tanks, planes, children, and grandmothers, no strings attached, whereas the US, UK, Germany, etc. might attempt to attach some stipulations to arms exports.

We will never agree...!! For me the best would be a competition between all the modern tank of the world to see who is really the best !

These threads remind me of the incident (reported in Playboy - of all places) when the US Navy and the US Air Force was brawling wether the F-14 or the F-15 was the better plane. Some feeble minded person suggested a shoot out with live weapons. Nothing came of it.

the merkava (since mark III) has modular armor , also all its electronics are upgradble , so dont get so fussed about the leclerck. by the way , check the thick armor of the merkava's IV against top attack. check for some more info. i dont get how u can compare armor here , when its such a classified info? a word about APS (active protection systems) - these are not gizmos , as some said here , its the future. ATGM's becoming more effective , u want tanks to go lighter, APS is one of the solutions. way to go for the russians , for implementing the first hard kill APS (arena) on operational tanks! Lt. Mk (res.) i speak for no organization

Sikman    Merkava somewhat underated   9/29/2003 7:39:26 PM
I would say the latest Merkava is superior in armor and fire control system than just about any MBT. Perhaps the Challenger 2 equals or comes close in terms of sheer armor strength but overall survivability is far superior with the mk IV. Also both tanks have high velocity 120mm cannons. I would say however that the power to weight ratio of the Mk IV is its weekness relative to the M1A2, Leo and Leclerk. However it is much more powerfull than its predecessor the Mk III. Finally I would say the Merkava's reactive armour is just as versatile as the vaunted Leclerc with the ability to snap on and off in the battlefield.

TankboiKelarius    Modular Armor   9/29/2003 10:21:18 PM
It would seem that some people in here think that modular armor is the best thing to come along since sliced bread. I would like for one of you to show me a SINGLE situation in a modern battlefield in which modular armor is useful. In my eyes, the ability to replace armor panels in the field doesnt mean anything, because unless WW3 occurs soon and we see massive armored campaigns like in WW2, you simply wont need to replace it. Modern composite armor can withstand MANY hits before it needs to be replaced, and it is likely the tank will have to be brought back to a maintenence center for an engine overhaul before they will ahve to replace the armor.
