the israelis have begun to bring women into combat roles both as aircrew in the idf airforce and as light-infantry in the israeli border-guard (which belongs formally to the police but is under tactical control of the army and receives an allotment of conscripts from the idf's annual intake). the women are placed in mixed male-female units. according to the israeli press these women have been heavily involved in the fighting since september 2000. the first woman infantry combat casualty was a couple of days ago, when three border-guards, one of them a woman, were hit by palestinian automatic weapon fire. |
