Note that Switzerland is not EU, but Swiss adjusted and adapted their legal system to be as compatible with EU as possible, mainly to avoid obstacles in trade with "true" EU nations. Schengen related problems are troubling other, EU nations, as well. However Swiss have reputation of being more xenophobic and paranoid then the rest of the Europe.

The Swiss are right to stick to their guns. You cannot trust a Europe which was indecisive while Croatians were getting massacred, unable to arm themselves because of EU arms embargo. The EU paranoia with respect to self defense, as if it would have turned Croatia into a war mongering aggressor to let them get a few weapons to survive, is highly hypocritical and suspicious, rendering Croatia to the level of client state. And Switzerland is not even a former Soviet State risking falling into Soviet orbit.

This is not closely related, but there is one thing which is difficult for me to understand. There is a talk in EU about European Defense Forces. Overwhelming majority of EU is in NATO already. It is quite clear that it would create duplicated and ambiguous chains of command, which is a disaster. It does not take an expert to see that.

The EU army is a means to independently control small states within or near the EU without going through restraining NATO protocols. It came to light during Brexit and other EU threats against Hungary on the refugee issue that if a nation does not have its own army, then it must depend on the EU army, it can be recolonized, so to speak.
