What does everyone think of the General being summoned to explain himself to the White House?

The good general is going to have to pay the piper.

I dislike President Obama.  I think he is a leftist that is totally unqualified to serve as the commander in chief of the greatest nation in the world.  I think he has been a lousy President that will continue to push through policies that will ultimately hurt the country.  That said, he is still our President, and in a country where the military is under civilian control it is vital that our generals not be able allowed to publicly undercut the executive branch.  Period.

I think we are seeing a lot of hypocrisy on both sides of the issue.  A lot of Obama supporters are indignant that a US general would criticize the President, but some of those same folks applauded every time a soldier would criticize President Bush.  On the flip side, a lot of Conservatives that wanted those same soldiers hanged on a petard are cheering General McCrystal on.  I would probably agree with a lot of what McCrystal and his staff had to say, but he was out of line and probably needs to go.

I'm sure there are lots of lessons to be learned in this incident, but I would dare say chief among them is that there is no such thing as "off the record" when it comes to talking to members of the media.

General McCrystal is too shrewd to be taken in by the media. Perhaps he recognizes the absence of leadership at the top and wanted to make a political statement. Although past conflicts between top brass and the oval office have deferred to the latter, it is the position that wins, not the person. Maybe we need another general in the White House.
