Subject: WW11 What ifs?
Johnny Frost    7/11/2003 4:21:01 AM
What do people thoughts on the most interesting "What ifs" of ww11. I immediately think of Hitler not ordering his armour to overrun the Dunkirk and Calais beaches allowing BEF and French Forces to escape. Would this have changed the outcome? What about the decision to switch the targets from the airfields to the cities by the Germans in the battle of Britain. What if Hitler had pushed for Moscow and not the Caucuses in 1941. What if Japan had attacked Russia and not the US, from Manturia?

mr_rok    RE:Nazi nuclear programme   3/22/2004 4:24:34 AM
The Nazis were developing a nuclear programme but it never got to more than a handful of scientists working on it; the reason is it had to rely heavily on theory of relativity (Einstein-Jew) and because of the blind hatred of the jews this was marked as Jewish physics and was despized by the zealous Nazi physics of that time. The other factor was Hitler himself-never believing (understanding) truly in the technology hence it never got full priority it required; and I read some of the original German scientist memos; they said that Hitler wanted results in 2 years or less; the brains knew that was impossible so they never openly suggested a nuclear programme which could compare to the "Manhattan project" to Hitler; in reality the Germans were at least 2 to 3 years from completing the bomb (in 1945) If anyone is interested you can read Nick Cook's "the search for antimatter" (his 10 year gathering of info for this book is available in detail on Venik's page ()) and even in this info chapter you will find many truly almost unbeliavable "what if's" of the third reich

DragonReborn    Spain and Turkey in WW2?   3/22/2004 9:21:05 AM
Why didn’t Hitler Get Spain involved in WW2 with the promise of Gibraltar and other parts of British overseas territory as reward? I know that the Spanish had been badly mauled in their civil war but what kind of state were the Spanish in 1930-1945? Franco was an ally of Hitler and Mussolini and I know that the Spanish had bought the rights to manufacture ME 109’s and many other German weapons. Also what about Turkey? Especially after Germany had taken Greece, surely it could have offered some incentives to Turkey in the form of territorial gains in Greece and Russia and a chance to regain parts of the Middle East that it had lost in WW1. Though I can probably think of the reasons why neither country got involved in WW2, how far were they from getting involved and how much of a difference would it have made if the Allies had also faced a Spanish Army in the Mediterranean and North Africa and a Turkish Army in the Middle East and the Russian Caucasus?

ccooke    RE:WW2 What IF's Sea lion   3/22/2004 9:55:50 AM
If Hitler had've used more panzers and the lufftwaffe more @ Dunkirk then the BEF and the French army involved would've all been killed or captured. With Britain's only real army out of the way, Hitler could then go on with the Battle of Britain and if he only hit RAF airfields, bases, factories, radar locations, etc, instead of bombing cities, the Lufftwaffe would've destroyed the British airforce and then hence with air superiority and some surface and submarine assets, the Germans would have most likely destroyed the RN, this would then give the Germans the complete go ahead for Op Sealion. Current thinking backed up by some documentary evidence is that the Panzers were stopped by order of Hitler as a way of underlining his authority over the military. There was never any reason to suspect that the BEF could be evacuated in any numbers or that the British would not sue for peace after their defeat. As for destroying the Royal Navy, The Germans may have been able to overcome the home fleet but not the RN in its entirety. If Invasion were so imminent then the rest of the fleet would have been pulled back for home defense. The same goes for the Airforce. Most people forget the strength the RA and RN had globally. At no time was the rest of the RN recalled. Operation Sea Lion was more of a political move to try and pressurize the British government. The river barges that were stacked up in the coastal ports could only have crossed the channel in the most ideal of conditions. There were no plans for specialized equipment etc. such as the Allies had on D Day. Vast amounts of military equipment were sent to North Africa at the height of the invasion scare. The British could have been starved out. But I don’t believe they could have been invaded. ccooke

Barbarossa    RE:WW2 What IF's   4/7/2005 3:17:04 AM
I agree with you to a point, but I respectfully think that the Japanese had more important things to worry about than violating the nonagression pact with the USSR. Had they have gone back on the nonagression pact, that would aste the precious little resources that they had in reserve for the upcoming offensive strokes of 1941/1942. I thought that the most twisted point of the war was when the pact was signed in April '41 two months prior to Hitler's massive campaign in the east. When I first got into studying WW2, I asked myself "If Germany and Japan were allies, why didnt they BOTH attack the USSR?" Had this have happened, it would have been the USSR who would have been put on a massive two-front defensive war. As a result, due to the immense vastness of the USSR, the Red Army supply lines would have been hideously long, and she would be overextended and bled white fairly quickly no matter the size of the army. The sheer vastness of the Red Army would have been thus used against her (USSR) because she would not be able to maintain the army in the field. With this all out of the way, then both countries would be free to carry on with their plans once the bear had been slain. Another what if I was thinking about was Hitler staying true to the Hitler-Stalin paact, and using those forces instead to conquer the Middle East to secure the Suez Canal and massive petrol reserves. India would then be threatened from both the east and the west. Once this is out of the way, the British Isles would be next, etc. I think that in all reality, Hitler would have stopped after all of this and consolidated his gains and concentrated moreso on building Germania and the 1,000 year Reich rather than worry about the US, 2,000 miles distant. I do not think that with both Russia and Britain out of the war that the US would have gone on the offensive in Europe because that would be almost utter suicide because they had no logical starting point. I think that the US and Germany would have settled this diplomatically rather than militarily, but that is just my opinion. I am not too sure about Japan, on the other hand. Any thoughts on that?

the americans put the japs in a very hard place when trying to leverage them into reducing the war on china. basically the japs imported their oil from the us at the time along with various other strategic minerals and the americans tried to use the threat of cutting these supplies off to compel jappanese obedience. when the americans did act and cut off the shipments the japs were faced with a situation where their entire economy was going to collapse within about 60 days. had they chosen to go into russia at this time to support the germans two things would have happened. first off zhukov's divisions would have crushed their attack and second their economy would have fallen to bits in short order. there was no oil in russia at the time to grab up to make the economy go. had the americans not misjudged the situation so badly it's interesting to speculate on the course of the war.

pzwicke    RE:WW11 What ifs? Japan   4/7/2005 4:22:34 PM
I think that one of the most interesting what ifs would have been if the Japanese had attacked the Phillipines at the start and then let the Americans come to them. I remember reading somewhere that the U.S. had made plans for fighting several different wars and they color coded them. I believe that the U.S. plan for fighting Japan was call "Code Orange." The plan would have had the U.S. navy coming to the rescue of the troops in the Philipines. The Japanese could have worn down this relief force from their bases in the Central Pacific and sunk a lot of the U.S. fleet in deep water.

I note that many of these ideas are from one of my War Colledge games where I/We won WW-II for the German/Axis powers side. I think that prity much summs up the possable out come of the changes.

Most of this post fails to go to the full extent of the changes wrote by the new desigions. "This one seems like a biggie. They tried somewhat to take out the BEF but the RAF asserted air superiority. If the Germans diverted more tanks though... If the BEF had been captured, then Overlord would be executed with three US beaches instead of two. Or maybe even more." No there would be no US invasion at all. Without the BEF and coupled with the Germans winning the BoB, the Brits can not stop the German invasion and England falls to the Germans! >What about the decision to switch the targets from the airfields to the cities by the Germans in the battle of Britain. "Cities can suck in a lot of damage. Rubble is pretty much rubble if you bomb over and over again. So the bombs were pissed away. War would last another year or so without airfields to base 8th AAF. Bombing Germany would take a bit longer...if ever." Failure to understand that without switching target plans the Germans win the Battle of Britan! This can be speeded up if the Germans bomb the radar stations too, to take away the GCI advantage that prolonged the BoB, by making up for infirior Brit strength. >What if Hitler had pushed for Moscow and not the Caucuses in 1941. "Push for Moscow: Conquers Moscow, freezes to death. Overextended, Russians merely cut off the rear and sever supply. Stalin shoots a dozen people who try to rebel. Rest of Army surrounds Moscow, Caucasus forces sweep through East Germany, or try anyhow..." Right. The Ruskis retreat, can not move factories fast enough to stay out of German hands and thus the Ruskis run out of everything. Having won the BoB and invaded England, the German Army is ~50% stronger that the historical level and Blows the Ruskis out of the war. They are aided by the Japs who by invading Russia from the east, draw Ruski forces away from the western front. This further aids the German advance! With out England to shelter the Convoys to Russia, the Soviets starve. (Run out of supplies and equipment too!) >What if Japan had attacked Russia and not the US, from Manchuria? "Attack Siberia...Trans-Siberian gets cut, long bloody winter war in the steppes. Russia wins, Japan pisses away troops in the cold. IJN hits Vladvostok...but then hitting Siberia makes very little use of the excellent IJN. " Again a failure to see the strategic implications of the move! The Japs do not have to make a major comitment to the attack, just enough to make the Ruskis think it's for real! The IJN doing Vladivostok and even landing some troups there at the right time draws the Ruski reserve from the West. With the trans Siberian Rail Way cut, they have a much harder time repelling the IJA invaders! This is the difference between strategy and tactics. Think big!

"In addition to America having the atomic bomb, also remember that the Russians wouldn't be getting the food supplies from the US if we had gone to war with them right after the fall of Berlin." I did read, some where, that in the end the Western allies supplied enough food to the USSR to ensure 1 square meal for every Russian soldier. When I thought about that it didn't, in the grand scheme of things, seem terribly significant.
