Subject: How will LHA(R) land armour without a well deck?
westwords2020    9/16/2005 9:33:41 AM
I am puzzled by the lack of welldeck on LHA(R). With only MV-22 and CH-53X the USMC will not have capability to land armour such as tanks. LAVs might be hauled by CH-53X and HUMVEES externally by MV-22s but how do they plan to put EFVs in the water? Or will the Marines do without mechanized units like EFV and M1A1 tanks?

Sorry Carl S, just have a different point of view. Fact is that the LHA (R) first should have a welldeck. But because such a welldeck is expensive it was axed and the LHA(R) is now smaller and less capable as original planned. Even if there are some arguments for that - you mentioned them - these ships are not as capable as they should be.

Do a little basic research before making blanket statements. The LHA(r) been covered in great detail on this board. The Navy and Marines did not need a Well deck on the new ship, what was needed was a platform for the Osprey and a platform to conduct continued operations (aie wing) after the troops where landed. More planes flown in to conduct close air support. The design was based on lessons learned from not only war time operations, but disaster relief. The Wasp were good, but proved to be to much of a one trick pony, the well deck took up to much space and hurt continued operations of the airwing. The decision was made to have more "specific" built ships, that could do each job better.

"... My solution is to land all kinds of lighterage from LCACs to HSVs to LCUs on a semi-submersible ship which can act a mobile, floating drydock for all of the above vessels. ..." You mean a LASH barge, right?

the LHA R  is to compliment the LHD and add additional aviation assets to the meu s. the new make up is still being decided and will not be permanent, it will be assigned by mission .
