Subject: Is the Marines the most respect branch in the U.S. Military?
The Warrior    8/19/2005 11:18:05 PM
The U.K., and France, and other nations have their own Marines, but they are just water soldiers for their country, in the U.S.A., the Marines are the spear-head, the best trained, and they don't do just amphibious operations, they guard the President of the United States of America, and guard U.S. foreign embassies, and they are also still in Iraq, why does the U.S.A., use the Marines for so many tasks?, unlike the U.K. and France which just uses them for amphibious and naval purposes.

Most respected? Probably. Best trained? At amphibious landings yes, at infantry tactics, no. The US Army infantry is basically equal to the USMC infantry, only the USMC gets alot more hype. Yes, the USMC is the tip of the spear, only because they are a expeditionary force. The US Army is a much more dominant force as a whole than the USMC, because they are much heavier. The US Army has heavy artillery, Apaches, thousands of M1's and Bradleys, Strykers, etc etc. The USMC has light artillery, Cobras, M1's, and AAVs. The only real differences in infantry is hype and Espirit De Corpes (sp).

Not quite correct there GOP about artillery, the Marines have the M198 just the same as the army do, what they dont have is any SP Arty or any 105mm Arty. And right now they are ahead of the army as they are recieving the M777 lightweight 155mm Howitzer first.

My bad. I didn't think the USMC was as decked out with artillery as the US Army.

The USMC has 4 artillery regiments equipped with nothing but M198s as far as I know.

All have 198s. 11th Mar are starting to get their 777. We have a MOU. The army provides MLRS support. HiMars gets beat back and forth since the 90s. Sometimes we want it, sometimes we dont. In the 90s we cased the colors of 3 Bns to pay for MLRS. Still don't have it.

You have to be getting HIMARS, as the Marine Corp hasnt bought enough M777's to replace every M198 !!! I thought this was due to the fact that some of the arty regiments would trade in their Niner Eights for HIMARS.

Marine Artillery is undergoing some major rework. They are getting her M777 and I think the HIMARS is going to go to reserves. They are also adding 120mm Mortars (EFSS). I would prefer that the Artillery Regiments had M119s and the EFSS to support the MEUS and that they reform the Field Artillery Groups, although rename them for obvious reasons, and equip them with HIMARS and wheeled 155s similar to Caesar. I think the M777 on a HIMARS chassis would work and not have the same limitations as the Caesar. These would support larger MAGTF operations like Gulf Wars I and II.

You are right Field Artillery Groups do need to be renamed. ;) I am not a big fan of truck mounted howitzers for the following reasons: 1 I your prime mover goes down you loose your tube, with towed any vehicle in the battery can tow your weapon, hell with the 777 you can even do it with a Hummer. 2 Truck mounted howitzers have traverse limitations greater than towed, and it is not as easy to to speed shift or do an out of traverse mission. 3 Truck mounted howitzer have limitations when carrying out direct fire missions, look at the Caeser, it cant carry out a zero QE mission over teh frontal arc, the Cab is in the way. Now you may say that in todays modes of warfare Arty should not need to carry out direct fire missions, but on the advance to Bagdad there were several occasions where Marine Arty batterys had to drop tubes and engage targets at 800 yards to prevent being over run.
