Subject: ARG/ESG: question for the marines or phib guys
ret13f    3/23/2005 2:40:42 AM
The generic ARG is an LHA or D, a LSD and an LPD. How are/is the the MEU distributed among these ships, other than the aviation on the LHA/Ds, what is the rhyme or reason for who/what is on which ship? For example: the armor platoon will be on the LPD because thats where the LCACs are. or whatever the case might be.

The LHD will have the MEU Command Element, Airwing, BLT HQ, Weapons Company, Artillery battery, LAR, and an Infantry Company. The LSD will have the majority of the Service support group, Tanks Amtracks with 1 infantry company The LPD will have the rest of the service support group and 1 infantry company with small boats. Of course all this can change, is flexable depending on how the MEU wants to load out. But that has been the normal loadout I've seen. You will also see the tanks on the LHD sometimes.

I've often seen the LAR company on the LSD, as the LSD can carry more LCACs than an LHA. Sam is correct, the MEU can load how they want, usually depending on the expected mission. For example, if they are expecting to conduct split-MEU ops, they will divvy up their GCE differently than they would otherwise.

I've read the new LPD-17s will likely become the primary carrier for the EFV/AAAVs. The vehicle decks on those things are supposed to be huge. A buddy of mine worked putting ducts in the San Antonio for a few months last year and was very impressed by the size and layout.

Its about time they consulted with some Marines when they built that thing. When we geared up with our packs and weapons and then attempted to walk down the passageway and the ladderwell, we always ended flattening some poor swabbie against the bulkhead.

The Wasp, WI/HF and Auston Classes were also designed with Marines involved. Wider p-ways and ladderwells. Ever try to get to your compartment on the old LSTs or Raleigh or Auston Class LPDs with a pack and 2 seabags? Don't even get me started on the LPH. :)

I have seen the load out change in mid cruise when we had to split the ARG up once to take care of two different missions at the same time (We split an LPD off) and we re aaranged the load out a little and another time we lost an LPD for about a week for repairs so there was so more shuffleing of the force, we brought some recon elements over from the LPD.

>>JCT RE:ARG/ESG: question for the marines or phib guys 3/23/2005 6:25:19 PM Its about time they consulted with some Marines when they built that thing.<< You would like to think that they had us in mind when they did that but I heard poltiical correctness was also a driving force. The Navy used to have a requirement that two sailors be able to handle one litter case. Problem is that many female sailors cannot do this. It requires 4 of them to handle one litter case. As we know mmost pasage ways and ladder wells are too narrow to permit a 4 person litter carry. I also understand that the hatches have been designed to make them easier to close. This was supposedly done to ease some of th eproblems and objections to women serving on ships. These changes are supposed to be applied to other new ships.

I hear the faint rumblings of some good 'this is true, no ' sea stories; so let's hear 'em, don't be shy.
