Subject: College Education

OK, here's my next question. I have heard that the Marine Corps will pay for the college education of the active Marine and his/her spouse. Is there any truth in that?

To some extent yes. Montgomery GI Bill is one thing.

ok, well is it a guranteed thing, or is it like the whole joint-spouse thing? I really want to go to college, but i can't afford it. I've been out of high school for only 5 months. i was going to join the Marine Corps and get my education that way, but in 2 months i will be married to a Marine, and now i don't even know if i'll be joining, but i want to make sure i still get my college....i just need a secure way to do it. How can i find out more information on it, or who could i contact? i really would like to thank anyone for their help....i'm really lost in what direction to go right now

Join the Marines, and you are almost GUARANTEED money under the GI Bill. Add to that the fact you will probably receive a significant amount of financial aid as you and your spouse won't be pulling in any big bucks soon, and financially, college should not be a problem.

And Tuition Assistance, while at 90 to 100%, can be used on active duty, the question in the Marine Corps is "Will my unit allow me to go to school?" Depends on your MOS and what type of unit you are assigned to. Marry the Marine, You can usually get in state tuition as a military spouse. Unless you have a lot of bills, swing your school should not be a problem on his paycheck. Just NEVER figure in ComRats when you do a budget.

After you get married, your husband will no longer eat at the chow hall. His meal card will be taken away and he will recieve money for meals. Commuted Rations. Comes out to somewhere around $250.00 a month. However, any time he is in the field that money will be stopped since he recieves food. Either MREs or hot chow. I've seen way to many young married couples get in trouble because they factor comrats in when making money decisions. If the Marine is in a MOS that goes to the field alot, or if the MArine doesn't normally go to the field but gets tagged to go on a CAX (6 weeks in the desert) or a float (6 Months on a boat). The money comes up short, bills don't get paid ect. When figuring out how much you have to spend each month, never count that money. Remember he may not be eating at home but you still do. And the Corps doesn't give you money for food. Think of it this way, he may never go to the field or maybe only for a week every year, then you always have that money for entertainment or other non essentials. If one day he comes home and says "Honey, I'm going to CAX, you don't have to worry about the money you won't be getting. You just don't go to a movie. Much better than having to worry about the phone or power being turned off. What does future husband do in the Corps? Being a Marine is a hard life. Being a Marine wife is even harder.
