Subject: RECON is now an elistment option
ZackG    12/1/2005 12:05:09 AM
For anyone who's interested... I am in the delayed entry program, and was signed up for infantry, however, starting Dec. 1, there will be the option of enlisting stright into RECON. It's kind of like the Navy's "SEAL Challange" ...you're garunteed a chance at RECON indoc, if you wash out, you go to your second MOS of choice. ...only thing I'm not sure of is if you go to indoc before or after SOI. I'd like to find that out if anyone knows.

Don't know if you have these or not Zack. Good Luck. Its from a few years ago but should still be accurate EACH MARINE WILL COMPLETE A PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST, AND AFTER A MINIMUM OF ONE HOUR OF REST, COMPLETE A SWIM TEST. DURING THE SWIM TEST, THE MARINE WILL WEAR FULL UTILITIES EXCEPT FOR A COVER AND BOOTS. TO BE SELECTED FOR IMOS 0321, A MARINE MUST ACHIEVE A 1ST CLASS PFT AND SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE SWIM TEST. THE SWIM TEST CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS WHICH HAS A "GO" OR "NO-GO" STANDARD FOR EACH PART. PART ONE IS A 500 YARD UNTIMED SWIM, SWIMMING 200, 200, AND 100 YARDS RESPECTIVELY DEMONSTRATING THE BREAST, SIDE, AND ELEMENTARY BACK STROKES. FOR PART TWO, THE MARINE WILL TREAD WATER FOR 30 MINUTES USING THE SURVIVAL BOB AND TROUSER FLOATATION METHODS. FOR THE THIRD PART, THE MARINE WILL SWIM 25 YARDS WHILE HOLDING A 10 LB WEIGHT OUT OF THE WATER (TO SIMULATE RESCUING A PERSON). A MARINE MUST ACHIEVE A "GO" ON ALL THREE PARTS TO PASS THE SWIM TEST. NOTE: THIS IS THE SAME SCREENING THAT IS CONDUCTED FOR ENTRY LEVEL MARINES AT SOI PRIOR TO CLASSIFYING THEM TO IMOS 0321.

No, the test I have was slightly different, but thanks. I'll work on my breast and back strokes... I've only been doing freestyle and side. I should also probably try swimming with the 10lb weight.

wow...its gotten a little easier..... in the late 80s early 90s to qualify, you had to go through s-3, s-2 then s-1 in the same day. For the parts- cant remember the order, 500 meters the same, but you did not have to dem. strokes. you just did it. Then you had to tread for 1 hr, not 30 minutes and then you had to rescue 2 or 3 saftey swimmers-real people using the 2 or 3 methods. all of this, like you mentioned was with min. rest. I dont know when you had to do a pft, but then, somewhere along the lines, then you had to do a speed hump-cant remember howfar and how fast or how much weight...but it was I think 5 miles in 1 hr with something like 40-70lbs+weapon, or 15 miles in 3 hrs-whatever
