Subject: Best Assault Rifle today: M8 vs. AK-101?
Schackleford    6/4/2005 12:35:05 PM
What would be the best assault rifle for an infantry squad (not for Special Forces)? Surely the german M8 is the way to go. Somewhat better then the M16 and slightly better then the G36, it is probably the most modern, reliable weapon in the West. But why isn't it bullpup? Every modern assault rifle today is bullpup. Just look at the Steyr AUG, FAMAS, L85A2, TAVOR, Type 95 or the FN2000. But isn't the M8 a bit to much for a simple infantryman? My choice: the AK-101. The classical Kalashnikov with plastic instead of wood and chambered for 5.56 NATO. It doesn't match a modern assault rifle in terms of accuracy, but it is simple to manufacture, cheap, easy to use and impossible to wear down. If the weapon simply has to be Western, how about the FN-FNC? Manufactured to modern standards, it has a special tight rifling to make the most of 5.56 SS109 bullets, probably surpassing the M8 in penetration, accuray and range with same bullet.

The FAMAS is the toy of choice . How many times I heard foreigners after trying it saying "Man I swap my ... for that thing anyday" . You really have to try it to understand ;-) Cheers .

Only assault rifle I ever tryed was the Diemaco C7A1. What a gun! I never had any problems with jamming or malfunctions (except for the magazines, who would get strained with the full 30 rounds loaded so I just loaded them with 28 or 29 rounds instead). We were on 5 days of practically constant exercise, with little time to sleep or maintain equipment. Our Browning M2's broke down, our MG3's fell apart in our hands- literraly!- but our C7A1's just kept shooting, hundreds of rounds each day. One guy in my squad dropped his rifle in a trench, filling it with sand. We thought that was the end of it but a few splashes of Break-Free oil and it was shooting again! The rifles were brand new which explains a lot. More worn rifles will probably show a lot more of the AR-15's legendary talent for breaking down at the wrong time at the wrong place. But I never heard of a Kalashnikov breaking down. And they are cheap. Aren't they adequate for the grunt, unlike Western rifles? Have we begun to focus to much on battle tech like fancy scopes and forgotten the virtues of good assault rifles: reliability, ease of use and price?

As far as I remember, I only assisted to one FAMAS failure during the ten of thousand shoots I assisted (and participated for a part). It was common to shoot at 400m with that (for good user). No fire recul, light, stable with his pods and comfortable. Able to shoot small rocket without transformation. But I never don't know for other rifles...

I prefer classic AK-47; only thing I would aad stainless steel gas tube, regular one will start rusting in moist conditions, great( cheep) ammo, great mags, also would modify the sights ,check Robinson Arms, Utah AK versions. great modifications. Bravo.Made in USA -ho-ho-ho.

There is no "best rifle". The "best" rifle is the one who fits the situation you use it for, you can afford, meets your requirements etc... So there is no "best assault rifle". Because the judgement might be also affected by patriotism or personnal choice. My "favourite" one is the Swiss SIG-552. Compact, increadibly reliable, good accuracy, handy. But it is expensive indeed and not suited for extended range making it mostly for CQB or short ranges.

absolutly my friend. I love stg 550 too(ak clone), but look on killer price. we are talking about tools fo millions of soldiers. yes any ak is overall better choice, no consumer reports on this one-ho-ho-ho

I would prefer an m8 or a g36 they may not be reliable or cheap but they have a good range and a fair amount of damage. I just in general prefer western guns because even though they jam they're powerful and have extremely good accuracy. But thats only in like desert or plains or urban enviroments now if your in like a jungle or in muddy trenches then id prefer an ak of somesort.

G36 doesn't do anything an M16/M4, British L85, French FAMAS, etc etc et does.  I think it's an okay weapon for what it is, but after putting some rounds through a G36, I did not see anything about it that made me prefer it to my issue M4A1.

As for the XM8, it didn't have jamming problems . . . it just melted during sustained use.  I'd take just about anything, including an AK with that patented "designed by a drunk orangutan" control layout over an XM8.  Thankfully procurement of that disaster got tanked.
