Subject: Why would anyone join the US Army over the USMC?
GOP    5/23/2005 1:52:26 PM
I have always wondered why anyone would join the Army instead of the USMC. I would much rather be the best trained infantryman and the first to fight rather than just another US Army infantryman. I also like the USMC's fast attack style rather than the slow-moving Army style. I am definitely not knocking anyone in the Army or anything like that, I respect the Army. But the Marines have the reputation of being the best, while the Army has a reputation of being very good. I wouldn't mind flying a Apache longbow, though (that would be my second choice other than being a Marine)

One possible reason: a proclivity towards seasickness might discourage a career in the USMC. Yes, I know I am being a little silly.

"Marine Corp recruitment is up since the don't ask don't tell policy was implemented.Army Recruitment is Down Since." Because the straight guys know they are safe in the Marine Corps. As indicated below Army won't kick out gay officer Army Times | February 11, 2002 | Associated Press FORT BRAGG, N.C. — The Army has refused to discharge an officer who admitted to homosexual conduct and volunteered to resign his commission. The Army wants Capt. David Donovan to continue in his job as a military policeman and information systems management officer rather than pay back the cost of training him. Donovan’s four requests for discharge — including one supported by Fort Bragg’s commanding officer — have been rejected. or this one for the reserves: Army Insists Retaining Gay Army Reserve Officer Sets No Precedent PHOENIX, Az. -- Far from being a precedent-setting case, the Army's recent retreat in the case of openly gay Arizona Rep. Steve May will not lead to changes in the administration of the "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue" policy governing gay service in the military, Pentagon officials said this week. The military on Monday dropped its bid to oust May, a first lieutenant in the Army Reserves, for violating the policy. The decision ended May's 21-month fight to stay in the military. The Republican lawmaker called the decision precedent-making and expressed the hope that it is the beginning of the end of discharging gay soldiers near the end of their terms.

Ft Polk where we used the JRTC for MEU (SOC) training. No Camp Casey but did do Camp Muchuck, just outside the Pohang ROKMC base and spent a few Bear Hunts around nightmare range up north. Ft Dix - have stayed as far from Jersey as I can. Have you been to Camp Riply Minn or Ft McCoy or Ft Drum for cold weather training? And I have way too much time traveling down Chicken Road.

"One possible reason: a proclivity towards seasickness might discourage a career in the USMC. Yes, I know I am being a little silly." I actually knew a Marine that got sick on the Mike boat in morehead city on the way out to the ship for a float and stayed sick every day we were at sea. We were kind and sent him back on advance party from Rota. They did threaten to kick him out.

First trip to FT Drum.....January 1977....from 1500 feet out of a C-130.....been back dozens of times. Been to FT McCoy but not for col weather training....most Army guys who were stationed in Germany didn't need the extra training. As for the gay officer.....notice he was an MP? Nuff said.

>>I have always wondered why anyone would join the Army instead of the USMC.<< Mostly it has to do with an excess of cognitive activity in the frontal lobes of the brain vis a vis your typical Marine. >>I would much rather be the best trained infantryman and the first to fight rather than just another US Army infantryman.<< So join the 75th Ranger Regiment. More action with less BS.
