You make some very valid points,I will not argue that we are not the most capable Army logisticaly, technolgical and over all Dominant military in the world.Listen to what I have said, pound for pound.I am comparing a Country smaller then the state of New Jersey with no where near the resources of the US.That has fought wars against larger forces. This has to be contributed to training.I am in no way trying to imply that Isreal is the most superior military. We Are learning as we go in fighting this insurgent war.Isreali Spooks have been training and helping the US in interrogation, and intellgince gathering. My comments on the US mobilization having a lot to be desired is in Sealift capability. We rely on commercial shipping contracts because the Navy Does not want Budget money going for ships to transport the Army, just as the Airforce does not like to spend on ground support Aircraft like the A-10.

What is the fixation on this forum with "versus" threads and "who's best" threads? It is childish, more sensible conversations are had in playgrounds around the world on a daily basis. It always descends to a nationalistic chest thumping excercise. Quite often influenced by how recently movies like Delta Force or Top Gun were on TV. Is it true to say Britain has some of the best Sailors/Pilots/Soldiers in the world? - Yes Is it true to say the US of A has some of the best Sailors/Pilots/Soldiers in the world? - Yes Same can be said of France, Germany, Italy, the list goes on. Lets leave these discussions where they belong, between military obsessed 13 - 15 year olds. Sorry about the rant, but this forum is just getting overwhelmed by these type of threads.

GOP    We aren't talking about effectiveness, we are talking about best training.   5/20/2005 7:45:57 PM
The US Marines is the best Marine Corps on earth because of their size, training, weapons, power projection, and very good training. The RMC is the best trained Marine Corps because they are very selective and very small. Could the RMC invade France or Germany? Probably not, due to pure lack of size, not quality, weapons, etc. Could the USMC? Yes, due to a combination of size, good training, weapons, etc. It would be impossible to have a huge force like the USMC compared to the small RMC. There is no way to train such a large number of people to be as good as a very selective group like the RMC To answer the question "Are the British the best trained army in the world?", I would say that they probably are. France and Germany might have something to say about that, though. Also, I think that the Vatican Honor Guard would probably have a very hard time holding off a real Army. They, as someone said in a earlier post (forgot who wrote it), are more of a Secret Service/police force

GOP as fond as i am of the marines there is no way in hell the usmc is going to survive invading either germany or france on their own.

I am not talking about actuallly invading France or Germany, I really mean opening a beachhead for the US Army to roll through (although they might not survive either, it is a tough place to invade)

flamingknives    How about relative sizes.   5/22/2005 6:03:31 AM
All the people who are comparing the RM with the USMC, you are aware that the US is many times larger than the UK? The British Army has some 36 infantry battalions, of which 4 (10%) are from the Parachute regiment, plus 3 RM commandos (7% of the infantry total) Compare the top 17-20% of the US army with the Paras and the RM and you'd be about right. There's been a fair amount of "Well, the UK army is so much smaller, they can be more selective" That only works if the British army is smaller, relative to the population.
