Subject: Light Infantry Marching Standards?
DeeJay    11/22/2004 9:45:15 PM
What are reasonable expectations of light infantry in conducting ruck marches. I know it depends on terrain and weather, so prtend it's a nice clear cool day. Now what times are expected when marching on grass compared to forest, and what distances should they be able march in a day or even a week. What is a reasonable rate of march (speed).

Doesn't the French Foreign Legion have a motto of "March or Die" ? With something like, you figure their marching abilities would be pretty fierce. Anyone have any ideas?

When's the last time those frogs won anything in the battlefield? ^_^ Yankees, Brits, Aussies, Germans, Viets are much better fighting men.... Btw the French Legion consists of many "mercenaries"......moroccans..africans...etc. If that troll FS see this, he will probably flip.

So far, this thread is correct. 12 Miles in three hours with a moderate load (50 lbs) is the sutainable standard. For planning purposes: Light infantry are alloted a kilometer per hour thru the forest conducting reconnaissance. The British have much harder, heavier standards than the US Army, when it comes to moving on foot.

Speed is not the only gauge of excellence.Taking a Team,Squad,Platton etc.Through a narrow 7-10 click lane to move into postion while aggressor forces {Infantry and Scout Aviation)are searching you out is more of a gauge for comparing excellence, and much more taxing. The French Armys Forced marches in retreat are the most impressive. What Patton did in the Battle of the Bulge is the greatest in my opinion.Although mechinized a large number humped it under the worst possible conditions and then fought in a major battle.

You have to remember that weight isn't the sum total of their worth. You give a FO 100 pounds of weight followed by MG operators and regular infantrymen. Given all that weight and if you are moving fast over uneven terrain you have a slight miss step and then that becomes a major injury due to twist and the like. However no matter who marchs the most in the end it is who is alive during the real thing that matters.

Did 18 miles in Missouri Hills (Fort Leonard Wood)LBE, Weapons, Kevlar no rucks thank God in 3.5 hours. We only took one 10 minute break to change socks. Was basically run, fast march, run, etc. That was 22 years ago, probably kill me today.
