Subject: US Marines and British Infantry
BRoger    11/5/2004 5:25:59 AM
How does quality of a US Marine compare with that of the standard British Infantry soldier? I ask because I find it interesting that the Black Watch Regiment in Iraq (British infantry) are replacing US Marines in their role near Baghdad.

badnews dien bien phu was only about 115 or 120 miles straightline from hanoi and probably no more than 100 miles from the limits of french controlled territory at the time.
i'd also note there were a whole lot more than 5000 persians in that army even if it never got close to the million the greeks claimed.

Alas, Idrew numbers from memory and should have resourced for exact figures, that said, was not my point, the point was that military units ares the extentions of a nations politics, NOT the driving force of some, and often in that position all lilitarys are thrown in untenable situations, and even facing defeat in the broader sense, the grunt almost always performs bravely and with valor regardless of branch or nationality.  Thus comaprisons like these serve little use other than chest beating

it's always amazing how well some units can perform under the most miserable of conditions.  one of my favourites is a btn of canadians sent to reinforce the hong kong garrison just a few weeks before the jappanese assault on hong kong.  pushed back onto the island itself the btn which was green as grass found themselves scavenging jap weapons to fight with because they were virtually out of ammo.  with the jappanese closing in from all sides they hatched a plan to "fix" the situation.  they were going to assault through the jap lines to the jap beachead where they were going to seize enough boats to get over to the mainland where they would penetrate the jap lines and break out into the countryside beyond.  they would then seek out chinese forces and resume the fight against the jappanese.  a british officer showed up and ordered them to surrender before they could put the plan into operation.  always wondered how far they would have gotten with it and whether given what the japs did to them later if they would rather have taken their shot at the plan.  they would certainly have had surprise on their side.

For one your misunderstanding BG its NOT USMC vs RM vs Dutch Marines vs X,Y,Z, and we(USMC) win.  I can understand some of the younger poster w/no prior military exp. not quite grasping how exercises work but some of you are formers.

Its simple Red Cell/Blue Cell or if it helps your understanding Red COALITION/Blue COALITION.  And just like real world COALITION ops involving multiple countries there's an HQ of combined leadership(Battle Staff- HQ Staff from each unit) and the actual manuever elements(the Plts and Co's).

For BG the NATO forces split in half.  Blue Cell always represent NATO forces.  The Red Cell always reps the OPFOR.  Now pls don't be confused they are ALL NATO forces but Blue reps if NATO actually had to conduct this op and in that case all forces would be NATO.

Red reps the OPFOR or if it were and actual op, Red would represent the Russian military instillations in the Baltic Straits.

In this exercise and if it would be a real op the MEB commader would be commander of forces in any Baltic Assault.  But the MEB is not the only unit in the Blue Cell  there are various countries unit that make the blue cell except the RM.  The RM & the USMC are never in the same cell.  Not b/c we're incompatible but b/c of the opposite.  USMC/RM proposed it in '99 but the other countries cryied foul, even though they would have outnumbered the USMC/RM team by about 13,000 to 7,000.

Also keep in mind for those who don't know what the fu(k I'm talking about.  They actually did a real world mission.

After BG 2002 ended most of those force formed up a few wks later Under 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade's Task Force Tarawa for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

This time all together.

And Also
If your writing that I wrote the USMC is better that the UK's RM then you obviously did'nt give me the courtesy of reading my Fu(king posts B4 commenting.

Allow me to clarify.  What that means is that many of the units from Battle Griffin(mostly from the US/UK Marines) formed up a few weeks later under title "Task Force Tarawa", lead by the 2nd Marine Expeditonary Brigade.

Which goes to show the versatility of all the units involved to go January-Feb in Norway and within a just a few wks be leading the charge in Iraq.

As you might know the British have the best trained Army in the world and they have more experience than the US military, the reason the British Army are taking over is the Americans have approached Iraq with the wrong manner so having the Brit's take over is for the best. The standard British soldier is trained a lot better than the US Marines but to be honest i think there should be Royal Marine Commando's there instead because there is no question to who's gonna win in that situation.

Don't get me wrong i think the US Marines are a highly trained bunch who shouldn't be under estimated

Damn the Brits talk some smack. I can't blame them though. They are sitting in Basrah with one thumb up there ass and another in their mouth, and they're playing switch. If they want to handle a city that is less dangerous than London, fine. But I wouldn't brag about it.

I couldn't agree more, but jamesbaf is not the only one shooting his mouth off on this forum. There have been attempts by people from all over to insult the capabilities of US soldiers. They attempt a subtle approach to their ignorant comments, yet everyone can see right through it. Many of these America bashers claim to be BTDT's, yet they have little more knowledge of warfare and the military than a 15 year old nationalist fan boy who creams over the sound of his own voice. I have never  seen BTDT's talk about things the way the media does. These people sit on their moral high horse and spew out last week's issue of "The Guardian" like they didn't just commit plagiarism. They construct their own view of the US military that suits them and helps them sleep at night. They then turn the tables and call us arrogant. However, there have been a few voices of reason on this forum from other countries that I greatly appreciate. However, there are many people on this forum that make such ridiculous comments that it begs the question as to who really is a BTDT, and who is watching the European media like a sermon.
