tsanchanim (paratroopers) did more, and better. givaty are younger but almost as distinguished. the 4 regular infantry brigades, however, are just that - regular infantary brigade. in the same sense you could claim that the entire marine corps are sf. sf have a narrower role, primerily that of effectiveness deep behind enemy lines. regular inf. no matter how good a fighting body, have a different role. as for previous post concerning support of sf and combined arms doctrine - true enough, but in that regard the idf is a single sf army...

The GSG 9 is not a military unit, it´s a unit of the border protection GSG 9 = Grenzschutzgruppe/border protection group 9 german military SF are Kommando Spezialkräfte KSK / commando special forces (i know it´s a stupid name) and the Kampfschwimmer of the navy they part of the waffentauchergruppe/ weapons divers group

with all my respect for all the persons of this discussion board and considering my knoledge the french foreign legion is not considered in france as a special force ( this is an elite force for sure but i'm not sure they have a special training in the french army the great difference is maybe their status they are 100 % LEGIONNAIRE ) just to say that talking about british SAS and foreign legion is a non sense the equivalent in france for the SAS is the 1 RPima wich is part of the COS ( special operations command ) and is the unit that keep the traditions of the two french SAS regiments of the second war ...

morrie    Its all a nonsense, you would be wise to fear ALL true special forces units from any country   5/26/2004 3:40:26 AM
The top elite special forces of almost ANY country's military would be formidable foes, and almost all military forces have at least one special forces unit, and they are likey to be formidable soldiers, deserving of much respect and fear, no matter what country they are from.

Special Forces Denotes the Army, and The Army Special Forces are indeed different in the mission they do, there is no other unit that I am aware of that conducts missions quite like The U.S. Army SF. Special Operators on the other hand are different. The U.S. Navy SEALS are by far the most capable of creating havoc and killing unwanteds there are. Britains SAS are No. 2, as they have always been first in taking out bad guys in hostage situations. Israel has the Mossad, and Anyone can deduce that when you are always at war, the spear is forever getting sharper. The U.S. Army Rangers have always seen as much or more combat-intense combat-than U.S. Army SF, so those two would be next. The Marine Corps Recon element would have to go next, almost a tie with the British Royal Marine Commando's. Australia's wing of the SAS is in there too. And as low as they get, the Russians are never far away with SPETSNAZ. And ten, is that ten? Korean ROK's aren't particularily a friendly lot. This is coming from an ex-ranger. Give credit also to the Airforce. The U.S. Has the only paratrooper qualified medics who get inserted into unfriendly confines, with assorted bad guys all over, and have these medics wander around and try to find downed pilots-Air force Para-rescue.
