the last two serious ops the spetsnaz were the theatre and the school. neither of which was handled all that well albeit the school was rather rushed in execution.

Something I read a while back: NZ was trying to decide if they should intervene, with their SAS, when there was a coup in Fiji (something about the Fijian army not taking kindly to an Indian being the PM). Decided not to because the Fijians had more experience. possibly apocryphal, I don't know.

Croquetou said : "the equivalent in france for the SAS is the 1 RPima" Quite inexact . The 1st Regiment Parachutistes d 'Infantrie de Marine is more closely related tp the US Green Berets , task wise . The most closely French Special Force related to the SAS is the CPA10 , task wise . See there for infos : http://le.cos.free.fr/cpa10.htm (Sorry it is in French) I am an Ex Sniper from the GIA , who was part of the GFCA who became the CPA10 . We can only compare a Regiment with another Regiment . How could we , let say , compare the SEALs with the 1st REP ??? They don 't have the same tasks so they train differently , with different weapons of choice and materials . How could we compare , let say , the Spetnatz with the NZ SAS ??? One is a fast moving bulldozer in rocky/woody terrain and the other a jungle snake . It depends what you are tasked to . As recent exemples , the Brit SAS during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan did 80% of the Intel job for the Allies . They were on the ground 1 month before the US moved in as required . During the campaign in ex-Yougoslavia , 50% of the Serbs targets were spotted and reported by the French CPA10 , as well as conducting SaR operations . (They did extract 1 US Pilots and 1 French pilots who have been shot downs by SAM 's) There is no "better" . They are (Special Forces) all good at what they do . Cheers .

I think that some people mixed the concepts of "Special" and "Specialized" troops. For example, mountain troops are "specialized", but not "special" troops. This is also true that it is difficult to say who is number 1 or number 2. However, there is a list: British SAS British Artic Patrol of the Royal Marines US Navy Seals Swedish, Finnish, and Danish rangers Israel's sayeret French 13rd Paratroopers-Dragoons Regiment, and Navy Commando Belgian LRRPs Taiwan and RoK (South Korea) Special Forces Some units of the Russian spetznas Greek navy commando and special forces South African recce (before 1994, they were very high level...nowadays, I don't know) I heard that Thai and Malaysian SOF were also good. They certainly are the masters of their terrain, but I am not sure that generally speaking they have more skills than the above units. Also, Singapore has very good armed forces, but I don't know about the value of their SOF. Generally speaking, China is developping more military power than Taiwan, but the Taiwanese SOF are far better trained and experienced than the Chinese SOF.

Unfortunatelly, I think that the Japanese SOF are not among the best. We have very good potential to become high level SOF, but there are too much restrictions in our National Defense, and decades of such a situation (in spite of the good will of our troopers) has an impact on the training, the experience, the power, the skill, etc...of our SOF units which are, moreover, a very few.

No point in ranking them, but the 10 best units (in my opinion) are Navy SEAL's Green Berets Delta force Polish GROM German KSK British SAS Australian SAS Israeli SOF (I forget the particular units) Ghurkas Indian SOF

Agree is pointless; germans regarded high but lost almost all wars, russians regarded low but won almost all wars. rule of bayonet( karate. etc) men with the bulets wins
