Subject: Attrition in Special Forces Selection
Comet    8/25/2003 6:40:18 PM
Does anyone know what the attrition is now for SF Selection? Now that they are taking new recruits as 18x, I'm interested in knowing how well they're doing.

I didn't know what all is part of program, so I was hoping that Priest could enlighten me. It would be interesting to see what provisions the Army has put in place to try and maintain quality.

Ok, here is what happened for me. My goal has always been SF, however when I first joined, I enlisted as a 74C(Computer Operator) so that I would learn knowledge and obtain a top secret clearance. However, after 3 months of mulling it over, I decided that I can no longer stand a desk job, (I have been at my current job for almost 3 years now as a programmmer and I am still in high school) So, because of all the new recruits that I got to join, my recruiter's 1SG had no problem with me reno-ing my contract. SO I went in as 18x, SF recruit. I had already taken the standard physical for 74C and my asvab score of 94 put me well over the top for the gt score minimum. So while at MEPS I had to get my airborne physical, redo my clearance(drop to secret), and then an interview with the commander. This interview was a surprise to me as no one had warned me about it. She basically talked to me about my goals in SF making sure I didn't think that it 'was a "007" type thing.' Then she assessed my current physical condition, what it is I do for sports for training etc. Then, was I passed that phase, I signed my contract. I have not yet taken the DLAB, you take that after initial MEPS and before you ship out. As far as psychological assessment, maybe that was during the commander interview. Thanks for the info on the old program. CD

Has anyone (your recruiter hopefully) talked to you about what to expect during SFAS, what the washout rate is like, etc?

ayep, that was one of the big issues that the commander talked about. Plus, I've formed quite a relationship with my recruiter, who completed SFAS but couldn't attend the Q on account changing his mind due to family. We have talked about it for months, so I switched to 18x and he put his sf packet in, he had his physical in fort drum NY just yesterday actually.

Hopefully your experience is the norm, but my guess is that it is not. Good luck, both with the SF route and with your career, however long or short it may be.

Professionalsoldiers.com has the attrition rate for SFAS and the Q course at 80%. Considering most of the guys on there are the real deal, it is probably an accurate number.

I don't know the hard numbers, but that sounds right-ish.  Most of the guys who wash out of the training pipeline these days are either failing SFAS itself or SUTs.  Failure right for guys who actually make it to the MOS phase is pretty low and is at least as likely, if not more so, to reflect some guy with disciplinary issues (DUIs, etc.) than academic failure . . . though recycling during the D and E courses is not too uncommon.
