It's all about the 3 B's:  Blanket (mylar)  Blade and Bladder.  Gimmee those 3 and I can survive anywhere on this planet outside of the polar regions.  Anything else, with exception of water purification, is mere but often welcome surplus.  Water puro is in a class of its own, which you immediately appreciate once you suffer.  Nothing like having it all evacuate from both ends simultaneously in a weakened state.  That truly blows.

No doubt you store that in the same pocket as the mop.  Luxury, I guess.

You talking purely military, or can civilian gear be added in? I would say that most Civilian gear is much better than what you will see in most infantry units. I read somewhere that an SF unit that was being deployed to A'stan bought some very high dollar, top of the line Vasque Hiking boots. Civilian gear is the way to go.

The question is, will you be able to cope with issue gear you get handed 3 months into your tour when your gucci kit is worn out or otherwise destroyed?

For quite a while the better stuff was on the civilian side hands down, no questions asked and all that for just about everything from boots to weapon optics and body armor and everything in between.  With the growth of the Rapid Fielding Initiative pushing new gear into the hands of the troops and the use of unit funds to buys commercial off the shelf kind of stuff as needed, it has gotten a lot better in the last, say, 24 months.  There are still a lot of things the military supply system just will never do right (boots seem to be high on that list for reasons I've never understood), though, as far as I can tell, and a lot of times when, even with RFI, you need a solution now and not in several months and the folks at REI or whatever have the answer to your question ready to ship inside 24 hours.
