Despite efforts to prevent the use of medical technology to determine the sex of fetuses, the practice of aborting baby girls has continued, with 117 boys being born for every 100 girls. In some areas the ration is 133 to 100. The natural ration is 106 to 100. In 1990 the Chinese ration was 111 to 100. The government is worried about social unrest as a generation comes of age with the lopsided ratio.
