08/31/05 - The second of two landing craft air cushion (LCAC) approach the stern gate of the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) on Aug. 31, 2005, approximately 100 miles south of New Orleans, La. The LCACs, assigned to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City, Fla., are used to transport cargo or personnel from ship to shore. Department of Defense units are mobilizing to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster-relief efforts in the Gulf Coast areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
