Procurement: More Armored Trucks for Peacekeeping

Archives

December 26, 2005: Denmark is yet another country buying armored trucks for their troops. Danish forces are mainly used for peacekeeping operations. So Denmark is buying 85 Eagle IV vehicles from the Swiss firm MOWAG. The Eagle IV looks a lot like a hummer, but that's because it uses a hummer chassis. The Eagle series vehicles, however, are heavily reinforced, and better able to handle the extra weight of the armor. Some of the Eagle vehicles will be equipped with gun turrets.

While these hummer vehicles have been popular with their users, especially because of the air conditioning, there are complaints about the vehicles being too wide to easily get through medieval towns and villages. The vehicles are also underpowered for hilly or mountainous terrain. Military organizations don't like to pay for the extra horsepower, that is only needed some of the time. But the troops notice it when it isn't there.
