Boeing and Sikorsky have set up a plant to produce the nine Comanche (RAH-66) helicopters for the engineering and manufacturing development phase of the project. So far, only two prototypes of the RAH-66 have been built. The U.S. Army wants to buy at least 819 RAH-66s. The project has been over budget and behind schedule for years and there have been frequent calls to kill it. The engineering and manufacturing development phase will cost $6.5 billion, but once it is completed in the next three years, production can begin. If that happens, the RAH-66 would enter service in 2009.
