Edward Daily, the "star witness" to the No Gun Ri massacre, retracted his claim recently after being confronted with proof that he was nowhere near the site of the incident and that his entire claimed military record was grossly exaggerated and contained numerous outright lies. Daily said he had compiled the story in his own head from accounts of other veterans, and that because the memory was so lifelike to him it still feels like he was actually there. While the Associated Press has stood by the central theme of its original report, most of the details (that troops were ordered to fire, that they knew women and children were in the target area) came from Daily alone.--Stephen V Cole
