Leadership: March 29, 2000

The US air force is facing a major leadership shortage. Many officers are leaving because of the brutal work schedules and the large amount of time they have to spend on diversity and sensitivity programs. One solution is to get them young. Throughout the 1990s, the army has been reintroducing it's JROTC (high school level Reserve Officers Training Corps.) There are currently 609 high schools with JROTC programs, and 189 on the waiting list to get programs. The air force plans to increase the number of schools with programs to 945 in the next six years. The major problem is getting enough qualified instructors, who must be active duty or recently retired officers and NCOs.
